Orienteering 2:00:00 [3]

Orienteering Mini-report: Camp Timberhill by Orienteering Cincinnati (OCIN).

Ohio is a territory that I seldom visit for orienteering because of the distance. However, seeing that Jan would leave soon and that doing orienteering to celebrate New Year was new to me, we drove to Cincinnati on New Year's Eve.

Jan and I did a "mass start" together right at midnight, EST. The countdown was more like: "5-4-3-2-1, Go!", with a less distinct line "Happy new year". On the first few controls, I could hear fireworks all around while I was in a thicket of wood. In the end, Jan and I were the fastest people in the night-O, even though we were both less confident on night-O.

Really liked the place that we stayed overnight. Just having heat and food were already awesome. The vegetarian chili was especially good.

One of the highlights of this trip was meeting Mattew Robbins and Mike Minium for the first time. I heard how much time they had put in publicizing orienteering. I got a chance to show some of my draft maps.

I also met Minto's family. They were showing some of the courses they ran when they were in England. One map that caught my eye was something called mini-sprint, which has a very short course (1-2 km), but has 20-30 controls. That reminded me a course format that Hong Kong and China used to do (?).

Some other small things:
- After this trip, we finished an audio book called "Predictably Irrational".
- Matthew and I talked about Gerald Yip for a while

After running the red course on the New Year Day, I wonder if I already hit my limit of the physical strength. From the results, it looks like my navigation is ok, but I am not as fast compared to 5-6 people.

Night-O route (I took >4 min to find Control #67. Big mistake):

Foot-O (Red) route (GPS watch out of battery before control #13):
