Race Evaluation

QOC: Fran Uhler Natural Area in Bowie, MD: Green

vmeyer

1. Darcy and I started at 1015. Trail to large clearing - cut corner. Cut across from Bowie State Trail to Merkel Trail. Come out at Y intersection - high than planned, but okay. Use this to navigate to control.
2. +00:45Go straight. Pass to north of control and end up closer to river at wet ditch. Tirn around and go to control.
3. +01:00Take small trail to place where we can cut up to Race Track Trail. Follow to trail into water stop just above #10. Down Merkel Trail and look for clearing. Go a little too far and back up and angle into conttrol.
4. Err by thinking we can stay in the woods. Realize this is a bad move and pop out to MT. Take this to RTT and cross creek at bridge, Angle in to clearing, climb embankment, and there it is!! We are impressed!
5. Pretty much take this straight - surprised that the nicely groomed backyard is not marked private property. Concerned that I don't have the foggiest idea where I am when we spot the control.
6. +01:00Go stright south and find that sclimbing the hill a bit makes for easier going. Take this until it is clear tg near the water stop. Onto the sewage treatment property and decide to take the cleared track coming out below the control. Almost hit the river, back up to past the green, and then into the control.
7. Straight and mail it - well, nail it for me by being only 10 yards west of the control.
8. Take this straight on and read the ditches correctly. Darcy falls in the mud. Control easy to see from far away.
9. Across the stream to RTT. Cross the bridge and attack from here.
10. Drop down to MT to water control and in from there.
11. Know that area around 11 can be tricky, so take RTT to where the trail starts to bend. Attack from here - things don't look right but the control is just ahead a little to the right!! Find out that lots of people had trouble here.
12. +01:00Head to MT and wade through the water on the trail. KNow that area where 12 is can be difficult, so take keep the power thingee in sight and go parallel to it. See the small pond but think it is too close. Go forward and decide that going north is correct thing to do. Find the control fairly easily.
13. Work way through junk and then end up on Fleming Trail. Was trying to go through the opening between the water, but this was too much work. Go to control from below. Exit control and fight through brush. This is all matted down for later finishers.
F. To the finish!!
