Orienteering (Buckenderra) 1:30:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 872 Off Road

BL training camp day 4. Putting out cones for contour only exercise on part of Buckenderra map to the west of the village. About 2/3 of the control sites were through the open paddocks, and about 1/3 were in the lower slopes of the forest to the west.

I also had a run half way up the hill to pick up a control that was left over from the downhill race on the Friday.

I then went around the Village with Liz putting out controls for the sprint race.

BL training camp day 4 session 1. I started them all off on the contour only map and quickly put out the last couple of controls for the sprint race. Then back over to shadow some of the younger squad members.

BL training camp day 4 session 2. Picking up the controls at the completion of the sprint race.

I had set a 2.6km course, and a 2.0km course, both starting up in a lovely little bit of the map to the west of the dam. Sam was the second starter and nearly ran over the top of 'Daisy' the highland cow, and a few others came close, but no harm done to squad member or cow. The courses then zig zagged through the village. Robert had a really good run finishing in 14:20, with Olle Poland in 2nd place in 15:59, and Richard D'Abrera in 3rd in 16:26..

Orienteering (Glenbrook) 1:30:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 872 Off Road

BL training camp day 3. Another early start. Left camp at 6:30am and drove to Glenbrook to put out the controls for the traditional 'Camp Champs' later in the day. The courses were mainly through the middle and eastern part of the Glenbrook map, plus the area near the finish of Day 1 at Easter in 2005.

BL training camp day 3. I had made a tiny map as a model event near the start/finish. While everyone was jogging around warming up and familiarising themselves with the terrain I was putting the water out at the drinks control. The day was warm and the area fairly open so some water would be welcome out on the course.

BL training camp day 3. Picking up the far controls after the 'Camp Champs'.

Quite a few of the squad had problems in the rocky slopes, especially coming off the flatter spurs. They were trying to just use the rock and vegetation to navigate by, but it all has a 'sameness'. Those that kept good direction and contact and used the contours did much better.

Heather Harding had an almost error free run on the 5.1km red course to come in first in 33:54. Lachlan Dow was about 16 seconds behind in second, and Liz Abbott a further 90 seconds back in third.

Orienteering (Buckenderra South) 1:10:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 872 Off Road

BL training camp day 2. Left at 6:30am with Liz Abbott to put out controls for the day's exercices. We drove to the southern edge of the map and Liz headed off down the hill to place the controls for the downhill'ish race later that morning. I put out about 20 controls on the large, flatish granite strewn hill as well as a few on the steep hill to the east. Some of the highlights were watching the sun rise through the large trees in the forest, and seeing three wombats in the front of their burrows.

BL training camp day 2 session 1. Most of the senior squad members were sent off on their own to carefully navigate around different parts of the course. Others went off in pairs, and the remainder (mainly green/orange standard) went with a coach. I took Olle Poland, plus we picked up Tom De Jongh at the first control. Olle doesn't say much but is very keen and listens well. Tom asked lots of questions. Everyone really seemed to enjoy the exercise - it is a wonderful area for orienteering.

BL training camp day 2 session 2. I had set a mainly downhill course from the top of Buckenderra South down to near the camp ground. The controls were on large features which made it about an orange standard. The intention was to get them to practice running hard to big catching features and attackpoints.

After an early finish we all headed off to Thredbo for the afternoon to bobsled, swim, or go for walks (some up the hill and others along the nature trails).

We had a mass start and some fun racing ensued. I ran along in the middle of the pack trying to keep an eye on how they were going - and some of the faster boys were certainly going fast. It was a lot of fun. Lachlan Dow said later there should be more courses with -3% climb. :)

Orienteering (Wainui Bay) 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 872 Off Road

BL training camp day 1. Putting out controls for mass start race on Wainui Bay map.

Orienteering (Little Buckenderra North) 50:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 872 Off Road

BL training camp day 1 session 1. This was done in small groups. Heather had put out about 15 controls in a part of the Buckenderra North map - the area had a nice mix of granite, contours, clearings, and was bounded by fences and the 'shore line'.

I went with Robert McDonald and Scott Bowen. We talked about our plans for each leg, then Robert or Scott would take turns to lead - trying to say out loud what they were seeing. We didn't race but still went along at a nice pace.

BL training camp day 1 session 2. I followed various people around their courses. We had a mass start of about 30 squad members, coaches, and parents. I had planned 12 courses which meant that no course had more than 3 people (but they didn't know who was on their course). There were five courses of approximately 3km, five courses of approx. 2.3km, and two of 1.7km. With only about 15 controls in a relatively small area meant that there were lots of cross overs, changes of direction, coming together at a control, but leaving in different directions. It meant they had to run their own race and try and ignore the runners going in different directions.

Running 46:30 [3]
shoes: asics GT-2110

Finally finished preparing the maps for training camp tomorrow, so went for a run with Robert. Mainly grass and footpaths through Evatt and McKellar. The first 30 minutes was steady then we did a few surges up some of the gentle rises on the way back home.
