Regaine observations:
1. Darn Tough socks (
www.darntough.com) are the greatest socks I have ever tried. I wore a different pair for each leg and didn't even have the faintest hint of a blister. (In contrast, in last year's rogaine I disintegrated two pairs).
2. Using a Seal Line map case attached to my pack straps allowed for hands-free running and climbing, which was great, but folding and flipping the paper directly caused a lot of damage. This still needs some tinkering.
3. If there's a way to know more about which State Forests are being heavily logged, that could influence my decision to participate in future events. There were some seriously ugly sections here, both in terms of aesthetics and navigability.
4. I've noticed a tendency to drift to the left under certain circumstances. I've finally figured out why. When going up a slope too steep to climb directly, I zigzag back and forth at 45 degree angles to the slope. I think I'm doing this in equal amounts, but being left-handed/left-footed I take more leftward steps than rightward. Based on several tracks I think it ends up a 3-1 ratio instead of 1-1.
5. Even though "real" rogaines are 24 hours, I think there's a lot more to be said for the 12 hour format: you get to sleep at close to a normal time, then wake up the next morning roughly on schedule. It makes a drive home safe.
6. Getting into a conversation with a meet director about local flora or geology will cause you to do something like leave your compass behind. It's happened twice now :)
