MTB race (8 Hour Killingworth) 7:55:00 [5]
Had been looking forward to this one a lot, as hubbie Richard was racing solo as well. I headed off ahead, then Richard cought up hapfway the first lap just as I was heading into the bunting which fenced off a sharp left hand corner (and this occurrence was obviously witnessed by him). We then rode together for a few laps, until Richard pulled ahead after I had slipped on a muddy corner at the bottom of a pinch climb. He then took a few minutes lead in the following hour.
When coming through transition after 6-7 laps I found out Richard had hurt his thumb and was 'going to give it another try' with his finger strapped. Felt a bit worried and lost some focus and interest. Coming into transition the next lap he was standing there waiting for me, to let me know he was going for a run insted as his thumb was hurting too much.
Rats. Pacer gone! I moved into chugging along mode - as you do - as this was my last decent long training ride before World Cahmps, but felt sad as Richard was hurt and 'our little race' was over. Would I have passed him? We'll have to find out another time.
