XC Skiing 2:08:00 [2]
ahr:158 max:181 slept:7.5
Pre-Super Bowl ski up on top of the Sandias with Stacie. She had wanted to ski yesterday, but after Friday's chilly experience I convinced her to wait until today to ski, when it was supposed to be much warmer. And it was! At least 30 degrees warmer, in fact, and there was hardly any wind to be felt in the trees.

Good time today, though not nearly as adventurous as last time. I rented backcountry skis to try them out. I found these particular skis to be less "grippy" on climbs than my touring ones, but I really dig the metal edges. After the first few corners I found that my confidence on descents skyrocketed and I smoked down most of the stuff that would have face-planted me before. In fact, I only fell twice - once while standing still (don't ask) and the second time going down an open but highly wind-swept field. And that was in the first 30 minutes, so the rest was faceplant-free.

We skied south of the road for a bit, up and down then on to the Survey Trail on the north side of the road. Switchback and Survey are really fun, both up and down.

Beautiful day today, warm enough that spots in the sun were getting soft and mushy!

My body is tired. I needed to rest. So I did.

Other Cardio (Telemark skiing) 1:00:00 [2]
slept:7.0
Yesterday I decided to finally get my shit together and learn how to telemark. I rented skis at outdoor rec and then started calling resorts about lessons. Turns out that tele instructors are rare in central NM, especially on weekdays. So, I had the brilliant idea that I would just teach myself. Thank goodness for telemarktips.com and their videos!

I headed over to Sandia this morning and...it went great, except for the whole -40 wind chill problem. I've always wondered what -40 wind chill felt like. No, that's a lie, I've really never had any doubt that it was a very unpleasant experience, something akin to the visual image of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter having sex. And it was. Okay, maybe not *that* bad, but it was really unpleasant.

Skiing wise, I managed without too much trouble, just trying out the basic drills. Never even fell, amazingly. The great part about this modern tele equipment is that you can do regular alpine parallel turns no problem. So I never felt out of control, and I could just revert to parallel turns if the trail narrowed. I definitely have a lot to learn, and I'm sure I'll be able to make great progress with a real lesson (hopefully in a week with outdoor rec... for free!)

On the way up the second time the lift operators were stopping anyone without face protection, warning them about the wind chill and the 20-minute ride. I can't believe they even let people up there, it was brutal. And the ski down was awful. Not only was I painfully cold (though I guess pain can be good in this case) but I got quite naseous, too, and very weak. I've never felt so physically awful while exercising, to the point of crying. Needless to say, once I got to the bottom I quickly went inside to warm up and consider what to do. There were a lot of people inside and word was it was only going to get worse, with the lifts likely closing as winds reached 40mph. So I just left.

As I was returning my skis an *hour* later the guys at outdoor rec said I still looked freezing. They made me hot chocolate and insisted that I stay and drink it. It helped. But good dog, that'll teach me not to check the forecasts more closely.

Running (trail) 46:00 [2] 4.2 mi (10:56 / mi)
ahr:160 max:181 slept:6.0 shoes: Asics Trail
Afternoon run in the foothills. Cold and windy like yesterday. I actually slept okay last night, but I had an early showtime this morning so it didn't last. First time a while that I wasn't awake already when my alarm went off. In any case, I felt totally beat today so I took it easy, stayed mostly on the flat(ter) stuff, listened to some sweet podcasts, imagined future vacations to neat, faraway places. My life kicks ass. Most of the time.

I put my car key safely in my wind vest's internal pocket before I started. It was still there when I finished running, which is a good thing since I don't hide a spare behind any lights or circuitry or doogadgetry like perhaps I should.
Other Cardio (Raquetball) 45:00 [2]
shoes: Kayano XI - white
Okay, so there's this guy in my class, the radio operator. He's a guard guy, so he doesn't exercise much. I mean, even less than active duty AF guys. In fact, until today, I thought he led a basically sedentary lifestyle. But it turns out that he and a bunch of other pipeliners get together just about every night for racquetball. So I dug out my racquet from the trunk of my car, where it's been resting for a year or two and joined them. It was fun!

Warm up along the road. On both the warm up and cool down I carried a map for some reading practice.

Running (track) 12:38 [5] 2.0 mi (6:18 / mi)
ahr:172 max:189 shoes: Kayano XII (pink)
We broke this morning, so I didn't spend the day in the sim. The bad news is that I will probably sim Saturday now, so no trip (Tahoe or anywhere). Good news - I got to run reps at the track!!! Talk about sweet!

8x(400 R + 400 E). Started slow because of all the stupid wind. Switched start points after two to have a tailwind at the end.

96, 100, 96, 94, 94, 92, 95, 93

It was fairly cold (around freezing) and very windy. And I still haven't slept well. I had a really hard time getting out the door to do this. In fact, even after I got out the door I almost bailed three times - once as soon as I stepped outside and felt the wind, then again when I stepped out of the car, and then a third time as I started to warm up (running into the wind). But I did it, and I'd like to think that this will contribute to my toughness. Gotta take the small victories.

Listened to some podcasts wihle running, which was an interesting change from, say, The Nields or AC/DC or Copland. Totally disconnected from the running effort in every way. Not in a bad way.

DDR 31:30 [3]
I've decided this deserves its own category, if for no other reason as to be able to easily subtract out the totals at the end of the year. And to make it really obvious if I spend more time DDRing than running + orienteering in any given week. Cross training, calorie burning, whatever, but it shouldn't get in the way of the real stuff.

More work on standard level tunes. At one point I had a 200+ combo going. Chizz.

DDR 45:00 [2]
slept:5.0
An attempt at doing all of the Plaguemix series in Standard. Got all but the two hardest ones, and I think it'll be a while before I can get those. I can't believe I had the energy for this at all, long day of mission prep and I still haven't slept a solid night since... sometime last week.

Wintry weather. Nothing serious, but the track will be a mess tomorrow. Reps on a treadmill? Is that even worthwhile? Maybe I'll swap with the intervals. Either way, I can't let tomorrow's sim drain me to the point that I bail from the workout. How can working be so tiring if I'm not going anywhere?

Monday Jan 29

Running (trail) 47:00 [3]
ahr:165 max:183 shoes: Asics Trail
Three for three. Today I hit the Cedro Peak area (just S/SE of where I rode to yesterday). Talk about hidden gem.

Nice day, fairly chilly. First order of business - Cedro Peak itself. Parked on the service road and ran the rest of the way (it wasn't very far) to the top. Lots of snow, about a foot in all but the sunniest spots, but there were some vehicle tracks that were runnable. The peak is only about 7700', but there are some freaktastically awesome views in all directions.

On the way back I turned down the Cedro Ridge doubletrack for a while, but it was pretty tough going in the snow, even though it was slightly *downhill*, so I knew it would be nasty going up. There was just too much snow, and nothing but animal tracks. I coudln't believe it - no skiers, snowshoers or hikers! People are missing out. Unless they're just using the rest of the huge area and I'm missing out.

Also test-drove my new iPod. Works great, probably because of the divine intervention.

Neck still hurts. At least while running I don't have to turn to look at overtaking traffic.
DDR 29:30 [2]
Short little evening session. Went through and passed all of the DDR 1st Mix songs on Standard. All on the first try, though none with flying colors. Next time I'll go for the Plaguemix set, which will certainly prove to be much harder.

I almost forgot from the past few days:
