Orienteering race (H2 ) 1:26:40 [4] *** 11.2 km (7:44 / km) +180m 7:10 / km
Late start due to babysitting duties. No issues with 1 or 2 and as I headed into 2 I thought to myself "Nice to have some control flow." Should never believe your own press! As I headed out my head said one way (the correct way) and the compass said the other way and foolishly I went with the compass. Went through more green than expected and plopped out next to a track, gully and big bit of rock and had absolutely no idea where I was. Tried to line it all up but nothing worked until I started to recognise the area as the leg between 1 and 2 and eventually realised that not only had I done a 180, but I was now orienting the map upside down. This must have been the reason for the original mistake.
Had a gel at the water drop at 5 and didn't feel too tired at the end. Didn't walk at all and only stopped to scratch my head in disbelief when looking for 3 and also at both water drops. I think I'll invest in a water belt to avoid these stops.
No probs with the rest, except being a bit cautious through the kilometers of vagueness. As much as I enjoy running at Dryandra, I don't think the area is that great for complex navigation. A few more short legs and changes of direction would have been good.
I'll guess the splits will show at least a 5 minutes mistake (GPS suggest I took 9 min on a 2 minute leg), but I know Tooms also made a big one.
Happy with the progression of my running, GPS says 13.36km averaging 6:29min/km. Looking forward to a bit of something different next week.
