Note
slept:3.5 (rest day)

Rest day. Meaning running around like mad between meetings and errands before heading to Heathrow for the flight back to Cape Town tonight.

One post-script on yesterday's run: I travelled in the company of Richard Barrett. One of the many topics we discussed was ranking lists. Not something to which I have paid attention over the last couple of years (wags will point out that these last couple of years coincide perfectly with my rapid fall down the lists...).

Anyway, emboldened by the conversation, and after what I thought was a pretty good run in a National Event, I checked the lists during one of the many breaks in the Super Bowl last night. Then I remembered why I've given up on them - despite finishing ahead of several much more highly ranked competitors, I'd earned next to nothing, since it seems as though National Events in forests, rather than being upweighted as they used to be, seem to be waste of time relative to sprint events when it comes to earning points. I thought someone was going to sort that out? I can only guess that, given its been a couple of years, it must now be there by design. Perhaps I should alter next year's training to peak for a few minutes' mad dash around some low level sprint event somewhere. Or maybe I'll just go back to paying them the attention they deserve....

Orienteering (NOC Sherwood) 1:07:14 [3] 12.93 km (5:12 / km) +140m 4:56 / km
slept:6.5 shoes: Oroc 340

Best run for a while. Rare to take part in a National Event or above these days, so thought I'd enter M45 for once. (M21E was just the small matter of 17.7km, so not a bad decision to stick on the 10.6km course, if I were to wake up at a reasonable hour, run, and still catch most of Man City vs Liverpool afterwards).

Pretty consistent run throughout. Winsplits reckons I have a mistake on the short leg 12->13 but that was maybe 10-15 secs hesitation finding a pit (I was 15m to the west in runnable woodland but the control flag was only visible within 5m I think. Martin lost time there too). Otherwise largely a mistake-free run. Perhaps slightly conservative with a couple of route choices and running speeds in places, but managed to avoid spoiling a solid run with any howlers at least.

Finished 3rd behind John Duckworth and Martin (4 mins and 2 1/2 mins respectively). Interestingly that was the top three (of the 35 competitors), in order, after control 2, perhaps 500m into the race, and hardly changed from that point on.

Orienteering warm up/down (Sherwood warm up) 20:00 [3] 3.1 km (6:27 / km)
shoes: Oroc 340

Orienteering (NOC warm down) 10:00 [1] 0.75 km (13:20 / km)

Cycling (Virgin Active Aldersgate) 37:00 [3] 15.0 km (2:28 / km)
slept:5.5 weight:71.1kg

Group Cycle class with Dominic. Lots of hill climbs.

Fitball (Abs workout) 15:00 [3]

Dominic suggested that we finish our spin class with a new regular abs workout. Eight of us were up for it. Was hard work but I gues that goes to prove how much we needed it!

swimming (Virgin Active Aldersgate) 23:00 [3] 0.5 km (46:00 / km)

Focused on technique, with lots of tests between 40m bursts. Hips, head, arms, pulling, legs all featured, mostly one at a time!

Cycling (Virgin Active Kensington) 39:00 [3] 17.2 km (2:16 / km)
slept:5.5 weight:72kg

RPM class with Amy. Was a little on the last minute so was careful to warm up rather than to jump right in.
