Orienteering race 57:14 [3] ** 8.0 km (7:09 / km)

After two weeks of absolutely no activity except sitting in front of laptop doing assignments i present:

Newcastle Minor Event: Botanic Gardens

The weather was horrible. Rain, lightning and thunder! At some point it stopped during my run but...i just didn't notice to be honest. It was only when i stopped that i realised.

Two different map scales proved quite a challenge. 1:5000 and then swtiching to 1:2000. Still HBG is a good sprint map and despite the conditions I did enjoy myself. But a general lack of any real fitness dragged me down (not to mention the wet clothes...

Trying on the new shirt was a shocker. I need to lose a few Kg :(

What a disaster. If the map scale the day before had been in my favour somewhat then todays totally destroyed me.

I hiccuped on 1 chasing an on flag on someones pants.. bloody thing kept moving. then undershot 2 by 400m and spent time circling around 6 and 7 trying to get my head around the whole fractal gully thing. 33 mins later i got to 2... At this point i gave up and decided to do this as a navigation exercise. Slow and sure had already lost the race anyway!

The rest was uneventful. Except i overshot 6 and found 7 first. Irony since i'd already been there. Stuffed up 11 as went overland instead of hitting the track.

All in all a bad day orienteering. That i finished 30min behind the 2nd last tells the whole story.

As for the state league - well i continue my form of getting worse and worse and as it turns out i ended up with 677 for the year well behind RL on 692.

Orienteering race (State League 12) 52:09 [3] *** 4.12 km (12:39 / km) +107m 11:12 / km
spiked:16/shoes: OROC 380

NSW Med Champs.

My chance to claw something back.. and it didn't work.

Lost a minute at the start trying to work out what was going on with the tracks. Then has a slow and shakey 6mins into the first control as i sorted out navigating in the pagodas. After that it went well and i seemed to be dead on (slow compared to others but at least accurate). I think the 9-10-11 leg was a waste since it just a backtrack along the same route from 10 as going there. 11-12 could have been better as well. should have stayed high. From 13 though it all went totally wrong as I left the pagodas and went into open country.

Got really confused on the accuracy of the map near 14 which cost me and severly undershot 15 and then in the confusion messed up 16 :(

This day should see RL definetly overtake me for 1st in the State League. No real surprise - i'm unfit and carrying more wieght around than i was at the start of the season.

Orienteering race (NOY7) 1:09:39 [3] ***
17c

Good start mean i caught DM (2 min start on me) on the second control and then dogged him until the leg to five.

Then it all went bad. Found an submerged fence at speed. Went airborne and the wire cut into the tongue of my shoe and nearly sheared through the lace. In my dazed state i wandered around the wrong creek for a few minutes before the haze cleared and cursing my luck took off to try and chase DM back down. ~ i never saw him again until after i finished and he was going down the finish chute!!

Was pretty good navigating from 5 through to 10. Caught SH (4 min start on me) on the ridge track befor edescending into 10. Made an error of judgement to descend and cross the valley track rather than acsending back to the track. 11 to 15 was no problems. Made a costly error on 16 and ended up back on 2 as i did not see the stump in the green and figured i was further north than i was and promptly headed south. realised my mistake and found the tree root/stump. then off to the finish.

Though i think callum and angus might need some remedial maths as the GPS watch said 66 not the 69 i was credited with. Oh well wasn't to know as i had to leave right away.

**Edit: Sorry boys my mistake you were right i misread my watch and never checked it again**
