Race Evaluation

QOC Rosaryville: Blue

Nadim

1. Started out fine going around the big reentrant. I felt I was running smoothly. This control is just about where I had placed a first control when I set the first QOC courses in the park.
2. Up the hill, then on the trail to the parking lot. I was wondering about whether this toilet was open but I ran past.
3. +03:45I went left down the reentrant to the trail, as I thought might be best for going to #3. As I got near, I caught sight of the parking lot near the gate and the portable toilet there. I went out of the way to get there. I probably lost about 3:45 with this detour and stop. Finishing-up, I crossed the road and started to use the trail; I ended up going down a messy reentrant. Once in the valley I was lamenting not being up on the road. I climbed higher and expected the control to be much closer to the road.
4. I kind of mis-read a reentrant and climbed a hill early.
5. I crossed the stream and used the left side of the creek. There was a trail right on the edge of being out of bounds.
6. +02:00I skirted the out-of-bounds area, crossing the creek late. I saw the barn and thought to use the trail near it. I didn't want because I'd remembered it being thorny to go downward from it, like I would have had to to get to the control. I passed one manmade object, then another. The way thickened so I cut right and found myself on the trail near the barn after all! Attacking from the trail with the barn to get me to the right point, I hit it easily.
7. I stayed on the right side of the creek until crossing the power lines. I started to use the trail on the right side of the creek since there was a good bend to attack from but thought it would be too far out of the way. I climbed a bit higher than needed but hit the control well.
8. +00:30I ran left of straight to avoid green. This took me over the first knoll. Near the end I climbed more than needed thinking the control would be further away from the creek--I really wasn't reading the map very well.
9. I ran straightish. Closing in on the control, I could see Jon Pifer ahead. I got fairly close but saw him heading lower. I was thinking the control was much further ahead so I went straight and stumbled into the control--good thing for me!
10. Jon Pifer had gotten to the creek about when I headed out. I followed behind but planned to go more left. The vegetation was pushing us right. I passed him when he stopped to tie his shoes, and got over the saddle. I went straight, down to the creek and climbed continuing to go straight, not using any trails. I came out further left than I had planned but could see the buildings. I knew then that I just needed to keep going straight. I spiked it.
11. +02:45This was a screw-up. I did not use the road as others have in the past--it looked out of bounds to me. I used trails to get through part of the green, then passed the cairn. Finally in the white woods, I moved well downhill. I had been reading the control to be on the right side of the reentrant. I passed an initial side reentrant and wasn't sure I should have. Not finding it but seeing a ditch nearby, thought I'd relocated so I cut back to an earlier ridge with lots of deadfall. I went through that before realizing the control was across the stream! Doh! I could see it once out of the green.
12. I ran fast down the grade and left a but just before the road to keep the climb down. I cut right on the rod to round the lake and was surprised to see that Mihai was fairly close behind still. I went up along the ditch to find a place to cross without getting wet or muddy--perhaps it was too far out of the way. Cutting back after crossing, I attacked a bit low but could see it.
13. I just went straight trying to move well to get away from Mihai but also trying to be careful. I stopped a bit short at a separate pit feature. Ater passing this, I found the control somewhat behind a tree.
14. I moved well just going straight and keeping out of the thicker vegetation. I ended-up to the right a bit, just at the old ruin. It was easy from there.
15. +01:00I started out going straight but once I hit the trail, I cut left to get to the ruin, go around it and go to the more open woods. While descending, I noticed my shoes were untied. I kept running, partly to make sure that I'd gotten away from Mihai. I cut left on the trail and stopped on distinct u-shaped curve to tie my shoe. I went straight from there, passing some others just past the creek. I ended up left and knew it from seeing the building to my left, much closer than it should have been. I went straight to it from there.
16. I descended down to the trail quickly, made sure that I found the trail intersection (I'd passed this one in an earlier race), and went over the small ridge to the control.
17. I went left around the first patch of green--it looked bad but Peggy told me later that it wasn't as green as mapped. After hitting the field and climbing on the road, I stayed on the right of the straight line. I passed the mansion where Peggy and I got married, went throught the parking lot, and cut across the light green woods to the big curving trail. Once across the power lines, I was reading trail bends well but I had already planned to lookout for the big cross reentrant on the right side of the creek, pass it and go into the control.
18. +00:30I ran around the hill, got on the trail, then attacked from a reentrant crossing the trail. I angled down into what seemed to be an unmapped parallel feature--a V-shaped deep gully, just off the main one--getting to it, I slide pretty far and got rather muddy including my map. Not finding the control, I climbed out and saw it in one just 5-10m further upstream.
19. +00:30I knew early on this leg that I'd already lost track of distance. I pulled-up early twice. Part of the problem was the line between #18 and #19 covered the gully. It would have been nicer if the control were on the giant root stock just before the tiny reentrant/gully.
F. I came back a bit to stay out of the green--looking at other people's splits, I missed a better route choice because I was moving pretty well.
