Running (Competition) 19:54 [4] 5.0 km (3:59 / km)
PGRC Women's Distance Festival Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/Men's Predict Your Time Race in College Park, MD. The race starts on the NE Branch Trail then goes along the Paint Branch Trail up to and around Lake Artemesia. Men ran after the women. My time was totally inappropriate. I planned to run at a pace of 21:44 which is right at 7 minutes/mile. I guess the excitement made me go faster as I finished second fastest. It was hard to tell pace relative to what I've been racing recently. It was a flat course in high heat and humidity. The winners tied being only 3 seconds off their prediction; one of whom finished right behind me.
Running (Warm-up) 11:37 [2] 1.25 mi (9:18 / mi)
In Jessup/Ft. Mead, MD, from Prairie Court to the start of the QOC Summer Short Series: Squirrel Chase. Eddie B., D. Onkst., J. Torrance and I jogged along teasing Tim Good about his new O' suit.
Orienteering (Training) 23:13 [4] 4.05 km (5:44 / km)

In Ft. Mead, MD. QOC Summer Short Series: Squirrel Chase: Field1. Somewhat a park O', the theme for this event organized by Ted and Darcy Good was "Chase the Squirrel." An expected time based staggered start was used. Eddie Bergeron was the "squirrel" whom we were to try to stay ahead of and to try to distract with peanuts tossed at him or otherwise when he passed. Jon Torrance started last and was the chaser. The course had multiple controls within the circle so in addition to trying to minimize errors we were to be careful reading the codes and features while trying to think at a high exertion rate. The running in open areas was fun though hot and humid. Eddie's injury and blisters kept him from running too hard as did a couple annoying peanuts which we dragged around in our sweaty palms. I did okay except for going to the wrong feature on the first control and running out the wrong way from #7 to #8. A good time was had by all except maybe Eddie.
Running (Warm-down) 12:50 [2] 1.25 mi (10:16 / mi)
In Jessup/Ft. Meade, MD. From Ft. Meade to Prarie Ct. Staying loose with Dave Onkst and Tim Good.
Orienteering (Training) 29:10 [3] 3.07 km (9:30 / km)
spiked:5/8c
In Jessup/Ft. Mead, MD. QOC Summer Short Series: Squirrel Chase: Wood2. After a short paper test to score our orienteering abilities, part II of the training was to run a standard short course which had many trail options in briared woods. Using a staggered start again people went through the course and times were recorded. Many had trouble with #3 and #5 (very shallow pit). At the end, 1, 2 or 3 minutes could be deducted if you could putt a disc into the disc golf hole from various distances w/only one throw. From the times of the Field1 and Wood2 events the minutes per kilometer were computed for each person. It was explained afterward that the winner of the prizes was the person who had the least drop-off in min/k between Field1 and Wood2. Jon Torrance won followed by Peggy. My mistake on #3 and bobbles on #6 and #8 caused me to have a 3:39 min/k difference (not counting the minute subtracted for the disc throw); it still put me in the top half of those who did both. As always on this end of the series event, more gaming, the making of pizzas, planning for fall events and a good time was had by all. We had the added bonus of Olympics to watch not to mention raising more money for our US Orienteering Team.
