Orienteering 2:00:00 [3]

I actually don't remember how long it took me but I did the ultra green at Pawtuckaway. Isabel did it too and beat me by roughly 7 minutes. Today she did the middle blue course, and did fine - it was good to see her doing her warmup before and after too.

Note

Some highlights from the weekend:
Meeting a family of 3 girls from RMOC, super nice, and their parents Ramesh & Terry. The girls did yellow and orange separately on Day 1 and orange, together, on Day 2.
Meeting Mathew Rogers from COC, 16, strong orienteer. His dad is an adventure race organizer. Kudos to Bresemans for bringing him along.
Getting to learn a little more about the operations of OUSA.
Interviewing some of the juniors including Bradley Rounds and Anna Campbell for a hoped-for "Faces in the Crowd" type feature in ONA and/or website.
Getting some affection from Peter Campbell and talking with Anna about her snake and stars (she knows a lot about them, e.g., how our sun will get weaker and become a red giant). She is 6. She was excited about winning a "real" award at her first A meet. When she looked at the award, which has a map on it, she immediately recognized it as a map she'd been on before. Apparently she has an amazing ability with maps. Another bit of hope for the future.
Talking with Mikell Platt about various things including 24-hour adventure running and how to make WRC2014 a success. Also about how to use the Laramie maps; maybe a training camp sometime in the next year or two. Shifman interested in putting on a rogaine in the area; it's just about the tastiest area for a rogaine, ever.
Performances by the juniors. There was some question about whether it was appropriate to encourage 15-yr-old Will to "run up" at red, and in the end I'm glad he did it. It was fun having lunch with him & his dad and hearing about his 7 weeks this summer in Sweden living with orienteering families and training, and about him coming in 1st place vs 80 other kids in an indoor orienteering event. It was in a school with four floors, and the map showed each floor separately; the lines between controls on different floors was drawn right across the page between the floor maps. Sounds like a great thinking challenge an da lot of fun.
Seeing other friends - Eric, Terry, Kissy, Allen, Mark, Eileen, Rick, Ardis, etc...
Missed the Cusworths and the Moores and Orlyn, but we'll see them somewhere else some other time.
