Thursday Apr 30, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Was intending to go home and do some cleanup but got a dinner invite and didn't make it home until after midnight.

Wednesday Apr 29, 2015 #

7 AM

Note

Water finally subsided enough (1 week later) that I could take my normal road to work!
4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 55:00 [3]

6 PM

Run - Pure Newcastle 44:22 [3] 8.1 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Darby Street to Honeysuckle to Carrington and return.
Lots of delays at traffic lights and crossing roads!
8 PM

Note

Finally got home phone and internet back after a week of isolation!

Tuesday Apr 28, 2015 #

5 PM

Note
(rest day)

Planned to do a double gym class but ended up being in work meeting from 8 am to 5 pm .... and then had an unexpected social invite to go out.
I didn't get home until almost 11 pm.
So unplanned rest day and no clean-up activities today.

Monday Apr 27, 2015 #

Note

Back at work today so break from monotony of STORM cleanup.

Walk - Street 54:06 [1] 3.23 km (16:45 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Around Carrington with a friend from gym ..... swapping respective flood horror stories.
I "won" from perspective of volume of water but they lost power for 5 days so they "won" from perspective of inconvenience.
5 PM

Walk - Street 13:19 [1] 1.06 km (12:34 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Time fill prior to Wooters Training.
Walk from top car park along new Anzac Memorial Walk / Bridge down to bottom of stairs and return.
Lighting very spectacular at night.
Doing this in shorts and a T shirt when blowing a gale is not recommended! Very cold.
6 PM

Run - Wooters Training 46:43 [4] 6.37 km (7:20 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Wooters Hill Interval Training.

About 1 km warmup.

4 repeats. 3 minute breather. 4 repeats.
From top of Barr Beach Carpark up the stairs of new Memorial Walk.
Whenever the fastest person got to the top they yelled out "turn" and went back down.

Followed by core work.

Needless to say I typically only got about 1/3 of the way up the stairs in comparison each time.
At least this time it didn't pour and my car key didn't die or have to get towed home.

Drove home via Seaham detour and no clean-up activities today.

Sunday Apr 26, 2015 #

Note

Storm Recovery Day 5.
Had the choice of attending Orienteering (with a long convoluted drive to get around flood water), a potential bike ride in Newcastle or continuing trying to repair yard. Chose the most pressing but least fun option.

Friend drove up from Sydney to help and attempt to lift my motivation to continue (Thanks).
Drove past some houses up here around lunchtime and the street was like a carpark with dozens of people working at some houses attempting to clear the backlog.
Another 10 wheelbarrows of gravel back onto drive.
Put retaining wall sleepers back from where they were washed away (one more than 30 metres away downhill and one could not even be located!)
Cleared the pipes under the driveway and was amazed to find they just blocked with leaves at the head and not completely full of gravel so that was a bonus.
About 4 poly trailers of debris washed up against fence lines cleared to remove the reminder of how high the water got (and the joke here was this provided instant visual gratification of a result rather than the long mind numbing process of trying to get gravel out of wide expanses of grass).
The huge mountain of branches, leaves and debris next to the Fire Pit is going to take ages to dry out and then a long day to burn.
Coming home to continue on this for weeks, in the restricted time available with daylight saving, is going to get very monotonous. However my recovery a lot more advanced than many others.

Saturday Apr 25, 2015 #

Note

Storm recovery Day 4.
4 hrs raking up debris (back too tired for another day of gravel!). Cleared roof gutters and found and replaced another 3 broken roof tiles from where tree fell on house and punctured roof. Moving multiple wheel barrows of chain sawed logs to central pile. More branches to fire pit. Somewhere amongst this cooked banana muffins as remaining food variety getting low!
Taking the night off to try to get into Newcastle to visit twin brother and see a movie.

Friday Apr 24, 2015 #

Note

Storm recovery Day 3.
3 hrs shovelling gravel. Chainsawing more trees up. Repairing broken fences. Using back of station wagon as trailer to move 6 loads of tree logs all to one big pile. Continuing to pick up fallen branches. Keep mixing it up when motivation wanes or particular muscles start to complain. And tomorrow .... repeat. Starting to slowly make a dent in huge backlog.

Thursday Apr 23, 2015 #

12 PM

Note

Still flooded in with roads access via Hinton, Raymond Terrace and Woodville cut. In theory can get out if I go north via Seaham and then Italia Road to highway.

Never lost power so just eating food in freezer but out of milk and juice. Mobile coverage still erratic. Isolation, lack of outside contact and human interaction starting to "do my head in".

Most of today chain sawing and moving more than 30 wheelbarrows of gravel off lawn back on to driveway. Physically very tired and have weeks of work to go!

Won't be attending work all week.

Not sure if I will be able to get through to NOY2 event this Sunday?

Wednesday Apr 22, 2015 #

12 PM

Note

Roads cut at Raymond Terrace, Hinton and Woodville so I can't go anywhere.

Total river flowed through my front yard destroying my gravel driveway with 30 cm deep ruts cut through it. So much water I was terrified it was going to rise another metre and make it through my house. Four large trees down on property. Fences down on both boundaries. Going to take ages and ages for me to manage repairs solo.

Neighbours dam across the road had water flowing 0.5 m deep across the road. His steel bridge, including the supporting brick pillars, washed 200 m down stream.

More later if I ever get internet connection back.

Tuesday Apr 21, 2015 #

8 AM

Note

A tree snapped off and fell on my corner of my house overnight (the garage).
A few tiles smashed and the ridge capping broken.
Water getting inside roof cavity and running down wall of garage.

I have cut up the tree with a handsaw this morning in the pouring rain.
Waiting for a break in the rain to try and get a tarp up or replace some of the tiles.
Decided against driving to work in this!

Dog is now inside as he was freaking out.

Still trees falling over now!

I got off lightly compared to neighbours have had a tree blow over and land on top of there house and one branch has speared through their ceiling and all the way to the floor in their dining room.

I would not be surprised if I am flooded in at Hinton and Woodville by the end of today.
3 PM

Note

Enough of a break in rain for me to get up on roof and replace broken roof tiles to restore roof to water right.

Gyprock ceiling in garage water damaged but hasn't collapsed. Went up in roof cavity with dust pan, broom and mop and removed about 15 litres of water lying up in roof cavity.

Other than that trapped inside by crazily heavy rain. Can only stand here and watch as my yard gets devastated.

Monday Apr 20, 2015 #

5 PM

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 55:00 [3]

Chest about ready to explode after long sequence of bench press followed by 48 push ups on my toes.

Attended gym rather than Wooters Running training as the rain showed zero sign of subsiding and it was very cold.

Sunday Apr 19, 2015 #

7 AM

Note

Very annoyed this morning to find radiator fluid all over garage floor yet again.
So problem from last week NOT fixed!

Drove 1 km up road watching temperature gauge before car began to overheat.
Limped it back home stopping every 300 m or so to allow it to cool down.

So a big thanks to Viola O'Connor and Sam Howe for collecting me and taking me to the State League event (and then return via Raymond Terrace so I could get 5 litres of radiator coolant).

So Monday will be another saga trying to get the Service Shop to repair the problem that didn't exist prior to them servicing it.
9 AM

Orienteering - Bush 1:06:40 [3] *** 7.07 km (9:26 / km)
19c shoes: Saucony March 2015

State League #4.
Hard 5. 19 Controls. Nominal 5.4 km.

Fared a lot better than yesterdays debacle.
Course took me to several areas of the map I had not been previously.

Slightly thrown by the first 5 controls so close together.
Lost time on 4 and 5 which is reflected in the splits.
Got my act together once they started being further apart again.

Since 4 was so close to 3, and there was two prominent tracks running over the mound, I was not too far out but I was on the wrong side of the mound.

For 5 I came across around the north side and then circled back down and wasted a small amount of time finding the clearing in the scrub.

Between 7 and 8 there must have been at least 6 runners passing through this area.

I was happy with long leg navigation 13-14 and 16-17.
2 PM

Orienteering - Bush 2:00:21 [1] 5.2 km (23:09 / km)
shoes: Salomons June 2014

Mount Sugarloaf.

Training day (prior to an actual event) with a friend who is interested in trying Orienteering.
Since my car out of action they had to come and collect me from home.

Started with basic navigation and map reading.
Only minimal compass work at this point.
Mostly on tracks or just off.
A small amount of cross country towards the end.
Finished with a hike up to the lookout.

Rain held off so ultimately a very nice and enjoyable afternoon.
Friend enjoyed it and told me they want to repeat the experience and attend an event.

Saturday Apr 18, 2015 #

8 AM

Run 5 km NSW - Official Lake Mac 23:44 [4] 5.0 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Park run tourism continued.

Stayed at twin brothers overnight so I could steal his racing bike for my own use, and also to reduce the drive distance to attend this event.

Waiting for official time but will be higher than the two Personal Bests achieved at Fingal Bay and Newcastle. EDIT 28 seconds behind PB.

Tried to go slower for first km and not burn myself out but it didn't work.
Also tried to keep up with the 22:30 pacer but they got too far ahead by the 2.5 km turn around point.

2 weeks ago I would have been ecstatic with this result but now I have the unrealistic mindset I should be improving each week.

Splits
1 km 4:14
2 km 4:31
3 km 4:48
4 km 4:54
5 km 4:55
So according to iPhone 23:22.
2 PM

Orienteering - Bush 45:19 [3] 5.28 km (8:35 / km)
shoes: Salomons June 2014

State League #3.
Mining Mystery. Nominal 3.4 km. 20 Controls.

Made a total and complete mess of this today.
Really struggled with the controls being so close together.
I thought having set here before would be an advantage but for some controls the reverse was true as I made assumptions I knew the feature it was on (ie a boulder) and it was the next one.

Splits show for #3 I was 32nd and #5 I was 34th (so in other words for this control I was the most hopeless for the entire day).
Ultimately no idea how I found #15.
Confused by the mess of tracks.
I gave up and decided to go to #16 and work my way back and then spotted it.
4 PM

Orienteering - Bush 23:41 [1] * 1.78 km (13:18 / km)
6c shoes: Salomons June 2014

Mining Mystery Control collection. 6 controls.
Walked the entire way.

Friday Apr 17, 2015 #

4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 55:00 [3]

This Friday instructor really makes this class a joy to attend. Chest track wanted to explode.
I am packing on more weight whilst reducing waist measurement so extra mass going where I want it.

Thursday Apr 16, 2015 #

4 PM

Gym Lambton - Class Weights 55:00 [3]

Fairly different from the Pump equivalent at Mayfield.
Chest track proved to be a killer.
Weights much older and plaster filled plastic version so think they have deteriorated and potentially lighter.

Note

Car serviced yesterday.
When went to garage to drive to work found radiator fluid leaked all over floor. Radiator close to empty.
NOT HAPPY JAN.
Topped radiator up with about 500 ml of coolant I had left over but it still soon overheated so came back and used (out of desperation) 1 litre of demineralised water from the iron.
Limped car back to Rutherford (driving slowly and watching temperature gauge).

Waited at Service Shop till they opened and complained.
Arranged a work colleague to give me a lift in 32 km to work.

Then was told I needed to be in Sydney Thursday for work so got a lift to Tudor Street to get a hire car and returned to work.

My car fixed and Service Shop accepted responsibility.

So then got a lift with work colleague back 32 km to Rutherford, then drove back my car back 32 km to work where I will park it for the next 2 days.

Then took Hire Car to use for next 2 days and drove back 35 km home after Gym and Pure Run.

So lots and lots of back and forth today!
4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 45:00 [3]

Arrived about 2 minutes after class left due to all the problems with car.
Maintained new benchmark of 22 kg.
Left 10 minutes early as still had to swap over my car with hire car and then get into Darby Street.
6 PM

Run - Pure Newcastle 38:56 [3] 7.03 km (5:32 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Run from Darby Street to Honeysuckle and then along foreshore out to Nobbys breakwall. Then back past Ocean Baths along Hunter Street and return. Had headlight torch on for about 1/4 of the time.
Very large group of people tonight.
And I needed this run after all the car swaps back and forth today!

Tuesday Apr 14, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Car getting serviced so got a lift with colleague so no running or gym.

Monday Apr 13, 2015 #

6 PM

Run - Wooters Training 37:24 [4] 6.35 km (5:53 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

This session was awesome and really enjoyed it.
Didn't keep stop starting iPhone so running time less than this.
5 min warmup.
7 min tempo run loop doing about 4-5 laps.
5x 60 second sprint followed with 60-75 sec recovery.
7 min tempo run where fatigued badly but still managed under 5 min/km.
2 laps as warm down.
Core and ab work - is there no limit to the combinations people come up with for this? This was really hard!
Great session and greatly helpful group of people.

Sunday Apr 12, 2015 #

10 AM

Gym Lambton - Class Circuit 45:00 [3]

11 AM

Gym Lambton - Class Flow 1:00:00 [3]

12 PM

Bike Ride - General 14:46 [1] 2.35 km (6:17 / km)

Friend invited me to come on a bike ride on Saturday night.
My bike been out of action for at least 5 years since left crank came off.
Took bike in back of station wagon and reinflated tyres and they seemed to survive.
Visited Hadleys Cycles and got a replacement nut to re-secure the left crank.
Then friend rang me to see whether I was "good to go".
I didn't have any tools in car, and they didn't have the right sized socket and shifter spanner wouldn't fit but tried pliers, so tried about 1 km ride but nut kept coming loose so I abandoned the ride, and they continued on to Nobbys. Take a raincheck for future.
Crank fell off completely on my way back to their house so about 800 m of distance was pushing it.

Once I got home fixed it properly with the correct socket set available.
1 PM

Gardening - General 1:10:00 [1]

1:40 pm - 2:50 pm
This weeks fallen stick harvest and burnoff in Fire Pit.
3 PM

Bike Ride - General 23:13 [2] 8.54 km (2:43 / km)

Quick ride around estate up and down every culdesac to test out repaired bike and make sure brakes and gears work and left crank didn't come loose again. All appears OK.

Saturday Apr 11, 2015 #

8 AM

Run 5 km NSW - Official Fingal Bay 23:16 [4] 5.0 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Park run tourism.
Fingal Bay.
Beat last weeks Newcastle best by 4 seconds.
Different to both Newcastle and Maitland in that all on concrete and it has three turnaround points.
Splits uploaded later.
Wooters run held afterwards.
10 AM

Run - Wooters Training 42:41 [3] 6.27 km (6:48 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Trail run around Fingal Bay.
With the slower group so lots of stopping but I stopped the iPhone timer for some of these.
A bit of running on sand and hill work .
I didn't wear ankle braces.
2 PM

Run - Newcastle Cross Country (#02 Ashtonfield) 32:00 [3] 5.86 km (5:28 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Even for distraction activity I thought attempting 3 runs today was really pushing it.
But held up well and didn't wear ankle braces despite running on dirt.
Graded start this time so I had a 4 minute penalty with 2 minutes between grades.
I haven't included the handicap in the above time.
Liked this a lot better as I kept overtaking people throughout and was only overtaken by one person - so could keep just targeting the person in front one by one.
Only at one point around the 4 km mark was the track to narrow to let me overtake two people.
Borrowed a DVD to allow relaxation and veg out session when I get home.

Friday Apr 10, 2015 #

4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 45:00 [3]

Relief instructor had to leave early to go to different gym.
Upped weights 10% (so 20 kg chest and shoulders became 22 kg as this is minimum step change) and it was a major challenge to get through chest track.

Thursday Apr 9, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

No gym and no running.

Wednesday Apr 8, 2015 #

4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Solo Weight Training 20:00 [3]

Time full prior to 6 pm
6 PM

Other - Ice Skating 1:00:00 [2]

I haven't been ice skating in probably 5 to 10 years.
I used to be really good at rollerblading (the only skill requiring co-ordination that I have ever been good at) and find that it is immediately transferrable.
No problems with ankle and managed lots of spins, turns, braking, backwards, one leg runs etc.
Actually fairly surprised how well it held up.

Tuesday Apr 7, 2015 #

5 PM

Walk - Estate 45:25 [1] 3.56 km (12:45 / km)
(rest day) shoes: Saucony March 2015

Attended Lambton Gym but only for a 1/2 hour chat with a friend.
Elected to go home and walk the dog instead to keep him happy.

Monday Apr 6, 2015 #

9 AM

Gym Mayfield - Solo Weight Training 20:00 [3]

Time fill on way to Nobbys Beach
10 AM

Run - Wooters Training 36:13 [3] 6.41 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Club social day / Easter egg hunt.
Run first to pre emptively burn off the chocolate.
5 km and 10 km groups and I ended up halfway between.
Wasn't sure I was going to be capable after yesterday.
Nobbys Car park along beach road and up through King Edward Park windy road to the top.
Then return back.
Left leg grizzling so did lots of balance and stretches afterwards which seemed to help.
12 PM

Walk - Park 45:01 [1] 3.67 km (12:16 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Around Horseshoe Beach, Nobby's breakwall and return.
6 PM

Run - Maryville Magic Mile 6:47 [4] 1.59 km (4:16 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Never heard of this but it was advertised prior to Wooters training.
Maryville Magic Mile (1.6 km) held once a month on western side of Carrington Park run course.
Loop run between two information signs spaced 800 m apart (basically from near the sea sculpture area down almost to the bridge).

Positive was first km achieved in 4:02 so only 1 second slower than Saturday so reinforces what is possible for me.

Came 14th. Best time 5:03.

Run - Wooters Training 6:28 [2] 1.0 km (6:28 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Warmup jog with group prior to interval training

Run - Wooters Training 8:32 [3] 1.62 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Start of interval training.
But I bailed as getting too tired and too slow plus it was raining constantly and I was just over it.
Left leg starting to complain and the fact my time had blown out nearly 2 minutes in the first interval told me to call it a day.

Sunday Apr 5, 2015 #

11 AM

Note
(rest day)

Spent a lot of last night limping.
Left leg as badly locked up as injured right.

Reduced overnight but still a problem.
Left calf swollen to be 2 cm larger than right.
Spent entire morning slothing watching downloaded TV and using microwave on a heat pack every 30 minutes to try and free it up.

Any exercise regime or success I have seems to always be one step forward and then one step backward.
I want to be able to attend running training on Monday!

Saturday Apr 4, 2015 #

8 AM

Run 5 km NSW - Official Newy Park 23:20 [5] 5.0 km (4:40 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

Light drizzle throughout.
Smashed last weeks personal best by 50 seconds!!
Start was a lot cleaner today as moved closer up to start line and I actually heard the start announced.
First kilometre was my fastest EVER RECORDED at any point in my life by a HUGE margin.
Combination of recent training, new shoes, and willingness to push to the point of wanting to give (or throw) up.
Last 2 km more of a struggle after first 2 km speed.
iPhone Splits 4:01, 4:28, 4:38, 4:54, 4:50.
11 AM

Gym Mayfield - Solo Weight Training 25:00 [3]

Same routine
2 PM

Run - Newcastle Cross Country (#01 Blackbutt) 21:39 [4] 3.76 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: Salomons June 2014

My first attendance at one of these.
Paid for a 22 season pass so better make the most of it.
Park Run, then this, then Orienteering Events the next day is going to be a physical challenge!

Very heavy rain compared to Park Run this morning.
Wearing ankle braces and Salomons as it was pouring and I didn't want to slip.
Really struggled after 2 km facing the hills and with lack of energy after Park Run.

Mick Kavur (from Orienteering a few years back) overtook me at this point and then flogged me by 2 minutes.
Left lower leg cramped really badly after 2 km.
So much so that when I drove back to Wests Mayfield to have a hot shower afterwards I could barely walk.
Hot water and stretching will hopefully relieve it.
Rest day required tomorrow!

Friday Apr 3, 2015 #

8 AM

Gardening - General (Part 1) 3:15:00 [1]

8:15 am - 9:15 am
Collecting this weeks fallen stick harvest.
Plus pulling out yet another dead tree.

9:15 am - 10:45 am
Unblocking drain running under driveway prior to upcoming storm.
Dug a full wheelbarrow worth of dirt out of the exit side trench.
Made up a ram rod using a leftover welded metal disk (from a flying fox left by the prior owner) to push / pull all the sludge from within the 6 metre+ lengths of pipe.
Pipes are not straight, has a joint in middle, and fall is wrong so not ideal but this is less work than digging up the drive and replacing it.
This worked better than by previous approach of a garden trowel taped to a piece of conduit.
If clean it out more often than annually won't be so difficult.
From Wallalong Gardening Part 4

From Wallalong Gardening Part 4

10:45 am - 11:30 am
Burning off Fire Pit (now out of Permit Season) and collecting more sticks within sight of Fire Pit.
12 PM

Gardening - General (Part 2) 1:05:00 [1]

12:10 pm - 1:15 pm

Several years back put in stakes around natural wattle seedlings so I wouldn't mow over them.
95% of the seedlings died.
Stakes have 'rusted' into the ground so hard to remove.
Progressively pulling them out.
Some by hand but others with my fencing strainer being used to grip the stake and the mattock for leverage.
From Wallalong Gardening Part 4

From Wallalong Gardening Part 4

Still got about 3 times this number of stakes to pull out.

Majority of time raking leaves and twigs in this area as once the stakes gone intend to whippersnip or mow to restore it.
4 PM

Gardening - General (Part 3) 1:25:00 [1]

4:10 pm - 5:05 pm
Moving 5 large poly trailers of raked leaves to dump by downhill neighbours fence line.

5:05 pm - 5:35 pm
Whippersnipping grass in this area to allow 2nd round of raking.
Hours and hours still to go.

Thursday Apr 2, 2015 #

4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Solo Weight Training 25:00 [3]

Repeat of other day. 10 mins on abs machines then 15 min in class room solo.

Gym Mayfield - Class Cardio 12:00 [3]

Haven't tried this since ankle injury.
Answer is cannot handle all the jumping and rapid changes in direction when sprinting.
So bailed before more injury. Not happy Jan.

Wednesday Apr 1, 2015 #

6 PM

Run - Pure Newcastle 42:08 [3] 8.01 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Saucony March 2015

New shoes very lightweight and comfortable.
Darby Street to Carrington Park Run and back.
Slow due to having to wait at lights to cross roads.
