Castleton Fell Race, 6.7m, 1500ft. 6th.
Fell races in the Peak District on a summers evening, brilliant. Decent field for this one, lots fast ShUOC lads, although I’m not sure orienteering fashion has improved any in 10 years!. Steady away at the start, 4th by the time we started up the hill. The front 3 (Jonny, Tommy, Will) were away and looked to be going easy, but I didn’t have the legs today to stick with them. Nice running over to Lose hill and a nice pace to the top. I was aware someone had caught up near Back Tor and halfway up Mam Tor Jack came past, it gave me a kick up the arse and I arrived at the summit just in front. Running ok back to Hollins Cross, I ran us down the left smaller dirt path, staying off the flagstones, which I think is faster. I thought I’d put a bit of distance between us, but as we hit the road Jack and Matt Elkington came flying past, I got going and caught them, but Jack was away again for the big sprint down the road, as we got into the finish field Matt came past in the last few metres, perhaps I should have been keeping an eye behind, not sure I could have out-kicked him though. Great racing. Bit of a shock to run so fast after Jura, but hopefully will find some more speed over next few races.
