running (Trail race) 10:00:00 [3] 30.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

The Ring:
I had two problems, one was fatal. I twisted my right ankle within the first two hours but ran through it. Ankle was weakened but runnable. The fatal problem was coming out of the aid station at mile 25 I missed the trail and took another that had similar colored blazes. I went an hour in the wrong direction and had used up half my fuel and water by the time I returned to the correct trail. The aid station had packed up and it was 5:30 p.m. with four hours to go to the next aid station. My lights were in my drop bag at the next station so it was folly to continue. I hitched a ride to the next aid station and dropped. If I had had a light I probably could have finished the 70 miler within the 29 hour cut off as I was still on pace for a 24-25 hour finish, but having injured my ankle I was okay dropping. On the positive side, I got in a nice 10 hour/30 mile run with support. I know some of the course, the rocks, and the climbs. It's the same course as MMT 100 and it's tough. The day was hot and humid but I maintained good nutrition and hydration so feel good about my strategy - except for directional incompetence!
