Swampfox:
Online registration for the US Orienteering Championships and Laramie Daze, to take place in Laramie, Wyoming, Aug 4-10, is now open for business. Navigate your way there by starting at the home page for the events: http://www.uschamps2008.com/

We would like to acknowledge and thank Kent Shaw for the use of his online registration application, and the extra time he spent to customize it for this event!

We would also like to point out that an embargo is in effect for certain areas reserved for the US Championships, and it applies to all runners competing in the championships. The recently revised overview map shows the embargoed areas as well as the approximate parking areas for each race/training for Laramie Daze: http://www.geocities.com/rmocer/poleweb.jpg

The terrain set aside for the US Championships is not to be missed. It is an incredible, unique area that is every bit as special as the very best of any of the previous US Championships, such as Silvermine in '78 or Dutchman Flats in '05. The maps are being surveyed by Mikell Platt from a superb base by Ivar Helgesen. Though the Day 1 and Day 2 areas will adjoin, the terrain will have a very different feel on the two days, especially on the advanced courses. It is a low frustration terrain, richly detailed, with many large to monster sized rock features (though with no rock underfoot whatsoever), and the runnability and visibility will be very good on Day 1 and outstanding on Day 2. Red and Blue courses on Day 2 will probably be set to be the longest ever at a US Classic Championship. There will be no thorns, poison ivy/oak, biting bug swarms, or vast green wastelands. Humidity will be low, and temps will be perfect for summer racing!

It's going to be a great week of orienteering, with 5 days of low key racing and training that will be ideal for the championship weekend.

We hope to see you in Laramie this August!

On behalf of all the race organizers,
Mikell Platt

Sweet! The day 2 terrain appears to be the area that I've salivated over year after year when driving Happy Jack Road in the East part of the Medicine Bow NF.
