Discussion: Course Description Details, Hill, on top?

"On top" is the normal position of a control on a hill, right?

So when the control is placed on top of a hill, the control description should simply read "Hill", right?

What if the actual hilltop position as observed in the terrain is not centered in the rings of contours symbolizing the hill, but in the western portion of the area bounded by the topmost contour line ring?

Shall the description still remain simply "Hill", or would the control position best be described as "Hill, western part"? Or "Hill, on top"? Hmmmm.

Doesn't that mean the contours are wrong in that part of the map and should be redrawn, possibly with form lines?

How about doing what most course planners should do, and choose a control feature that is unambiguous?

@Koen@Wilsmith
Both or those solutions would work in many cases, but not this one.

The hill is the most unambiguous control location in that area of the map. The control is on the highest point of the hill, it is just not centered on the topmost contour circle. This is USGS contours, not a map done to orienteering specs.

I'm not sure, but I think the control should be at the centre of the control circle and at the top of the hill. It need not be at the centre of the contour loop.

However, it should be easy to find or see the top of the hill from the centre of the contour loop. If not, as wilsmith says, find another feature.

@Koen, no, not necessarily. For a start, the central contour loop could be squiggly.
@toddp - if it's IOF symbols, the hill symbol suffices. If text, hilltop.

If there is nothing prohibiting use of the "top of" symbol, why not just use it?

After all, I am assuming this is not a Trail-O, where-in knowledge of the minutia of control description rules is expected, and, indeed, essential for success.

Agree with ndobbs and GuyO.

For a map with a USGS base, features will not be very precise and you just do the best you can to convey the position. So using the top of hill modifier would be appropriate. In the course notes point out the crudity of the map, so people know things won't be exact.

I seems opinion disfavors "Hill, western part".

"Hill, on top" it shall be.
