Note

Easier week before the Carnethy 5 now. This time I will actually take it easy unlike before Feel the Burns where I was doubtful if I would race for a couple of days before thanks to destroying my legs. That means a week without a track session. Will be nice to take a break from it.
10 AM

Hill walking 1:30:00 [0]

Slow with Claire heading in to see the site the group will using for their 2nd night's camping. Covered about 6km. Had a wee look around at where they can get water.
12 PM

Hill Running 2:02:30 [3] 11.14 mi (11:00 / mi) +409m 9:52 / mi
shoes: Inov 8 Mudclaw 300

Lammermuir DofE reccy part 2:
Ran the group's day 2 route in reverse. Taking it pretty easy. Was carrying a reasonably heavy rucksack for the first time in ages and it was noticeable on the climbs. Slower in places because I actually had to navigate something for a change. Conditions weren't great underfoot. Fairly deep crusty snow which you'd lose your leg in. Quite energy sapping. Things got better on the climb up Twin Law so I was able to speed things up for the last few miles. Much nicer weather than last time. Didn't have to contend with any blizzards or minor hypothermia this time.

Hill Running 1:04:07 [3] 6.82 mi (9:24 / mi) +371m 8:03 / mi
shoes: Inov 8 Mudclaw 300

Had thought I was working today so was going to take the day off. Turns out I wasn't so I got out for a nice hour. Up to Bonaly reservoir then over Allermuir and Caerketton to Hillend then back home through Swanston. Took it fairly easy but was still moving at a good pace. Definitely getting stronger on the uphills. Slowed down by ice in a couple of places and fell flat on my face coming off Caerketton

Note

Didn't get a spot for The Ben Nevis race. Ah well there's always next year.
11 AM

Hill Running 45:28 [2] 4.54 mi (10:01 / mi) +324m 8:12 / mi
shoes: Inov 8 X-talon 212

Easy hill run up Allermuir then dropping down to Swanston then home. Feeling fairly tired so probably shouldn't have gone up the hills but it was too nice a day not to. Ran in a short sleeved T shirt for the first time this year

Trail Running warm up/down 9:12 [2] 1.18 mi (7:48 / mi) +28m 7:16 / mi
shoes: Inov 8 X-talon 212

Through the bog. Enjoying running on something that isn't an athletics track

Trail Running intervals 59:30 [5] 5.13 mi (11:36 / mi) +511m 8:51 / mi
shoes: Inov 8 X-talon 212

Easy jog with everyone to the bottom of the dry dam.
6X4mins up the hill. Jog down recovery. First 2 went by fine (2nd was the fastest of the session) then I felt a bit rough on the 3rd. Not breathing well. Took the 4th easy then pushed a bit more on the 5th. Considered leaving it there but didn't want to drop the last interval 2 days in a row! Was 4th each time. Always a fair bit behind Iain, Eoin and Fergus. Always had a reasonable gap on everybody behind me.
Dropped back into Hunter's bog after number 6 and jogged back to the car.
Not sure if the back to back track and hill reps sessions are sustainable

Trail Running 26:09 [2] 3.16 mi (8:16 / mi) +77m 7:42 / mi
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra

Nice easy run this morning. Heading towards the bottom of Howden glen then breaking off to follow the farm track to Swanston. Up the wee forest path to the cottages then back home. Did some strides during the run as well to try and wake up the legs.
3 PM

Road Running warm up/down 6:06 [2] 0.89 mi (6:51 / mi)
shoes: Asics GT 2000

Road Running intervals 24:04 [5] 3.29 mi (7:19 / mi)
shoes: Asics GT 2000

4X800m then 3X600m. 1 min rest after the first 3 800s and 2 mins after the last. 1 min rest between 600s.
800 times: 2:39, 2:38, 2:39, 2:45
600 times: 2:02, 2:05, 2:07
I started to feel I was tiring during the 3rd 800. Was meant to be a 1 min rest between everything and 4 600m reps rather than 3. Was definitely getting tired and more slow each time. Very hard session with short rests. I think this was likely the cause of the tiredness but running in the morning may also have played a part? Not completely sure. I think I probably would've begun to struggle anyway even without the morning run.

Road Running warm up/down 6:24 [1] 0.71 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: Asics GT 2000
