hike 5:00 [1] 0.5 km (10:00 / km) +39m 7:12 / km

Lehardy rapids

The weather changed from rain to snow! There were about 2 inches on the ground when we woke up this morning, very pretty.

We stopped at the Lehardy rapids again. We stopped last night, and Mike got out in the rain, but I stayed in the car. I had enough rain yesterday, and I was tired.

Mike saw a lot of birds here. This was our first trip after he renewed his birdwatching hobby. We used to stop to take pictures on our hikes; now we stopped to take pictures and watch birds. No problem, just different.

Mud Volcano

Stopped here again. There happened to be a range talk when we were there, so I tagged along with him for a while.

Canyon to Sublime

A very nice hike along the rim of the Grand Canyo of the Yellowstone. It was pretty in the snow (which was melting fast). We saw a few people on the way out, and lots more on the way back. Artist's Point was crowded. Time to move on.

We decided to drive on towards Tower, even though the ranger said we would need chains to cross the pass. In fact, the road was dry the whole way, no problems at all.

Delacey Creek

This was a new hike to us. It was 3-5 degrees and raining, so we were the only ones on the trail. I wasn't sure I would last under these conditions, but fortunately, the rain was pretty light and it was a beautiful hike.

We did have some excitement as we got near the lake: black bear and cub on the trail. Mike has more details and pictures in his log:

Mud Volcano

Walked around this thermal area. I don't remember coming here in 2009, but I do remember it from our honeymoon. These strange features leave an indelible mark.

Riddle Lake and back

This was the last hike we did on our honeymoon in '97, and we didn't even make it all the way (back then). So we wanted to do the whole thing today. Nice forests and some cool meadows, ending at a beautiful lake. Weather started out nice and warm, turned to rain and cooler temps on the way back. When we got to the lake, there was an older couple there who lived in MT but had gone to KU as undergrads!

West Thumb

Light rain as we hiked around this thermal basin.

Natural Bridge

Very heavy rain on this hike. But fun, we had never been to Natural Bridge before.

Spring Creek

This was a hike that we have only done on skis before. I distinctly remember one section that was very scary on skis, and I was not happy that I had to ski that part. We recognized it right away when we got there. It was still scary and steep on foot, can't believe I did it on skis. Not sure I would be willing to do it again.

It was a beautiful day to be out hiking, and we never saw another person on the trail. This was a great hike.

Lewis Falls

Stopped to see some nice waterfalls on our way to Grant Village. We had not been to the south entrance since our honeymoon in '97!

Happy 20th anniversary to us!

Mike made an O map of the Old Faithful area before we left home, and he set courses for each of us to "run" this morning. We started before breakfast, but there were enough people around that we made the rule that we had to walk instead of run. It's so hard to walk when your mind is thinking "orienteering" so I walked pretty fast. We also had to stay on the trails around the thermal areas.

Mike had designed our courses so that we passed each other once in awhile (he took pictures of me) and we ended up at the Snow Lodge for a nice breakfast.

Upper Geyser Basin

Walk around all the geyser features near Old Faithful. It was 25 and sunny, so it felt much hotter due to the bright sun at altitude. I had not expected to wear shorts on this trip; good thing I threw in a pair at the last minute.

Saw our favorites, and was surprised by the lack of crowds at Morning Glory. Maybe it was too far to walk?

Ran into a guy from Belgrade MT a few times, nice chatting with him.

hike 15:00 [3] 1.24 km (12:04 / km) +4m 11:53 / km

Fountain Paint Pots

Drove up the road to see Fountain Paint Pots. This is usually the first stop in the snow coach ride back to Mammoth in the winter. Mike and I took turns telling the stories at each location. We have heard the snow guides tell the same stories at least 5 times now, we could repeat them all!

Crowds were a little heavy here. For the first time, we have seen large numbers of Chinese tourists in the park.

Grand Prismatic

After an early dinner at the Old Faithful Inn, we drove up to see Grand Prismatic Springs without the crowds. The colors weren't as dramatic, of course, but it was nice to have the place to ourselves.

Crazy night, as we had a mouse in our cabin. Took us a while to figure out what it was (it sounded so much bigger :) Then try to capture it/scare it away. Ended up sleeping with the lights on. Guess we learned our lesson about keeping food in the cabin.

hike 3:30:00 [2] 15.0 km (14:00 / km)

Fairy Falls, Imperial Geyser, full loop

A planned long hike. What was not planned was 75 degrees and clear blue skies. Which sounds nice, but was blazing hot at altitude. We carried a lot of water, and took it slow, but it was rough on the last bit which was all out in the open. Fairy Falls was nice, and Imperial Geyser was great. Such a pretty spot, and the geyser was in the middle of a turquoise pool. We saw a few people at Imperial, but we were on our own on the last bit through the open areas. When we got back to the road, it was packed with people trying to get good photos of Grand Prismatic.

Overall the crowds weren't too bad, but we're so used to the emptiness of winter, it's hard to adjust. I can't imagine being here in July or August.

Later that night, the skies were clear and we enjoyed going out to look at the stars. So nice to see the Milky Way again. We also got to see the stars as we got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. We had a cabin without a bath. We made reservations 15 months ago, and this was the last room available at Old Faithful.

hike 1:30:00 [1] 6.0 km (15:00 / km)

Norris and Artists Paint Pots

We had to drive from Mammoth to Old Faithful today, and they had closed the direct route for construction, so we took the long way around. It's nice to be able to visit some areas of the park that we can't get to in the winter, so we spent a long time at the Norris basin. This was a planned "easy" day. My calves were sore. Not used to so much walking, I guess.
