Paddle 2:10:00 [3] 21.5 km (9.9 kph)

Steady paddle at a sustainable pace. Went down by the airport for a change. Lots of geese hanging out down there. Nice afternoon although got a bit cold right at the end when the sun went behind the mountains.

Not bad photos considering the source - my Iphone.

Hike 40:00 [2] +225m

Steady hike up to the ski jump and then an easy run around the 2km loop and back down.

Paddle 1:25:00 intensity: (50:00 @3) + (35:00 @4) 14.0 km (9.9 kph)

Some laps on the Columbia River. Nice colours as the trees are finally changing. 5x7min high tempo with 2 min rest between.

The eddy where I lap back and forth.

The view from the boat launch.

Bike 2:00:00 [3] +600m

Good ride at MacPherson with Courtney, Rich and Annie. Nice long climb up Dolan Creek.

Bike 1:20:00 [2] +375m

Dusty Beaver and part of the Dolan Creek trail. Drier than I thought - just a few sloppy bits. Easy ride.

Run 42:00 [2] 7.5 km (5:36 / km) +210m 4:55 / km

Easy run up to the 5 km loop. Got caught in the rain halfway through. Legs felt fine although I kept the pace easy. Seems to be little soreness from the race.

Run race 1:34:40 [4] 21.1 km (4:29 / km) +125m 4:21 / km
shoes: Asics GT 2130

Royal Victoria Half Marathon. My first actual stand alone road running race ever. Courtney and her parents were also running so it seemed like a good idea to sign up not to mention that my parents live in Victoria so we could visit them as well.

I had run a fair bit less this season than the last two years (especially on the road) so the last month was a bit of a cram session trying to get some speed back into the legs. As this was my first race pacing was a bit of a shot in the dark but I think I guessed things pretty well. Going in I wanted to run the first 11km conservatively - maybe 52 min - and then try and speed up and run a negative split. There was over 5000 runners I think so the start was slow despite being near the front. It only took me 45 seconds or so to get across the line but it seemed like the first 500m were still very slow before the crowds started spreading out. The first few km went by in under 4:30 pace so I tried to slow down however I felt quite comfortable so didn't slow down by much. Hit 11km in 50 minutes so ahead of schedule. Decided to just try and maintain 4:25-4:30 for another 5km which I managed to do although it was beginning to feel harder. Hit 16 km and found another gear and passed a bunch of people over the next few km (although pace seems to have stayed about the same). Only started to run out of steam the last half km. Overall I think I ran a pretty good race - maybe could have run a tad faster early on but being conservative seemed to work out. Managed a negative split so goal achieved. Ran about as fast as I should have given how much I have run this year. Very scenic course and cool to run with so many people.
