Paddle 2:08:00 [3] 16.0 km (8:00 / km)

Friday night date night with...Leanimal! We rented a double sea kayak and explored Indian Arm a little bit. We went northward to an old hydroelectric set up and then gawked at the coastline on our way back south. The terrain really is gorgeous. And then the weather came in and it was an effort for the last 30 minutes to make our way back to base. Good to get in the water but I was certainly feeling my Church of Pain sessions in my upper body muscles.

Orienteering 39:25 [5] +250m

Really great course for a mass start score-o in the Capilano River Regional Park. I much prefer the competitiveness and intensity of a mass start vs. the 'festival' style of head out when you want. I had a few bobbles in the technical terrain but overall, I ran and nav'd well. It was good to bump into Gary Robbins as I really haven't seen him much yet out here.

Trek 2:00:00 [1] +440m
shoes: S-LAB WINGS SG 2nd Pair

Took EDawg on a discovery trek up the west side of Mt. Fromme. I wasn't sure where we were headed but we parked, into the pack he went, and we started climbing. The trail I grabbed onto got more and more grown over as I got higher but it was still quite discernible amongst the forest floor. After a bit of a tip-toe across a planked tree bridge, we descended into an old landslide at the creek bed. It was calm and we were alone on the mountain, only ~4k or so from the neighbourhoods of North Van. In a stroke of destiny, we found a discarded tennis ball and EDawg held it tight, saying 'BAAA' over and over again all the way down with a smile on his little face...he has developed a sort of obsession with soccer balls, basketballs, volleyballs, or anything spherical he can throw or bounce. Simple things...

Trail Run 2:20:00 [3] +450m
shoes: S-LAB WINGS SG 2nd Pair

Birthday run...and I kinda felt most of my 40 years. All of those aches and pains never do seem to go away. Ugh.

I started out with the intention of an out-and-back on the Baden Powell but after about 350m, I changed course and headed north on Mt. Fromme to do a bit of discovery. I stayed right at every turn just to see where I would end up. Before long, folks I past kept asked how much further to the "Big Cedar". I had no idea. But when I got to it, I knew because it certainly was BIG. I kept going northward on a flagged route and this time, I was asked how long until the waterfall. OK, I guess there's a waterfall further on. Yeah, it was likely a big one in total as it was a big drainage area it emptied. The part I ended up at was really nice and would be a sweet swimming hole in the summer heat. I didn't relish the thought of an out-and-back so I bushed it east and downhill to the Lynn river, forded it, and got onto the trail network on the west side after finding a little flagged route. Back to the car after that. Time for some birthday cake...I think Wee is quite excited about that part!
