orienteering race 1:04:42 [4] 6.3 km (10:16 / km)

Red course at Washington Crossing. Clean run, although a late, less than optimum route choice kept me from that elusive under 10min/k. Couldn't run at the beginning (knees and ankle were feeling creaky and sore) and at the end (tired), but was moving well in the middle. A fun course and a beautiful day.

gym 41:15 [2]

elliptic machine at the gym at school (reading to pass the time so wasn't really pushing it)

gym 20:00 [3]

lots of weight machines - just kind of felt like it, so did a bunch - the ones for the chest and upper back that get in a good stretch as part of it are my favorite. Too much time hunched at my desk lately...

Wednesday Oct 26, 2005 #

running 1:00:50 [3]

4 miles on the drive (39:12), plus jog down, walk home

Tuesday Oct 25, 2005 #

other 7:00 [1]

situps, pushups, stretching - it's tough trying to keep up with Valerie.

Sunday Oct 23, 2005 #

orienteering race 1:18:53 [3] 5.13 km (15:23 / km) +225m 12:37 / km

Green course at Nolde; a few bone head moves but any day I'm only 5 minutes behind Peggy D. goes down as a success in my book.

Friday Oct 21, 2005 #

gym 45:00 [3]

31 minutes on the elliptical; weight machines, situps, stretching

Thursday Oct 20, 2005 #

walking 59:59 [1]

Walk to the bus this morning; early morning meeting meant I started in the dark.

Wednesday Oct 19, 2005 #

running 1:08:00 [3]

~27 minutes jogging on the trails, ~31 minutes doing 3 miles on the drive, ~10 minutes walking home.

Tuesday Oct 18, 2005 #

treadmill 23:00 [2]

a quick late-night session in front of the tv...plus some situps, etc.

orienteering race 1:46:00 [3]

Was fine through #7 with only a a couple minor bobbles and then a repeat of yesterday - took over 30 minutes to find #8 even though I was really close several times - kept relocating and getting near and just could never recognize exactly what I was seeing in the terrain. Need to go back there some time and figure it all out.

Ankle not too bad.

A fun weekend despite my poor navigating.

Event: Boulder Dash

orienteering race 1:48:00 [3]

Green course at the Boulder Dash. Could not find #4 even though I was close several times - bailed to a trail, came back, twisted my ankle - was offered lots of help, thanks everyone - finally found the flag. Not so good on the rest of the course either.

running 28:39 [3] 3.0 mi (9:33 / mi)

I now know where the phrase "sucking wind" came from. A complete disconnect between my legs and lungs had me gasping, feeling like puking, and having to walk almost 2 minutes of this time and it's *still* on the fast side for me.

warm up/cool down 29:15 [1]

mostly jogging, some walking, the long way down to the drive and back home - the trails were wet, leaf covered and rocky and I did not want to join the DVOA ankletwisters club!

Sunday Oct 9, 2005 #

Event: Iron Hill

orienteering race 1:10:19 [4] *** 5.47 km (12:51 / km)

Green course at Iron Hill.

Friday Oct 7, 2005 #

swimming 41:00 [3] 1.6 km (25:37 / km)

back and forth, back and forth, ...

Thursday Oct 6, 2005 #

walking 59:00 [2]

Walk to the bus - not too hot, but very humid. Knee a little sore; brace may need adjusting.

walking 1:00:00 [2]

Decided to walk home as well - in the dark and a slight drizzle.

Wednesday Oct 5, 2005 #

running 28:55 [3] 3.0 mi (9:38 / mi)

3 miles on the drive

warm up/cool down 23:54 [3]

hike down to the drive and back up - still pretty sore from Sunday; the bruise on my thigh from the fall is quite impressive!

Note

Finished! And in under the time limit. More later...

orienteering race 7:22:00 [3] 26.3 km (16:48 / km)

Hudson Highlander X. Not sure of the time but about that. Poor navigation in several spots; pretty good in lots of others. Found myself at the back of the crowd quickly and stayed there although I caught up to a group on Surebridge. I had just fallen, wrenching my shoulder and landing hard on a pointy rock on the side of my thigh, and was very worried about being out in the middle of that map on my own. I had glanced at the long leg across the map but not carefully enough to realize there were lots of trail options and the thought of navigating that by myself after I had fallen had me spooked. So when I saw some people up ahead of me, I stuffed my map and just tried to catch up to them which I did. Worked with them for a while and then stayed with a different group after the final aid station.

Had fun but it was really, really hard work.
