Vilnius marathon 2011, second try, second failure to finish under 4 hours. I hate my legs!
The story: started easily and tried not to run faster than 4:50/km on flat surface, was slowing myself down and it was quite easy to run. The 1st surprise was in second refreshment point (9km) - there was no my electrolytes bottle! Lost some 30'' trying to understand the mess, and drank only a little bit water. First loop done in 52'16''. In the beginning of second loop was caught by 3h30min leader and his gang, and after running few meters with them noticed that some person 30m ahead is running with similar bottle like mine. Did speedup and caught him - I was right, some fucking frenchman took my bottle and apologised that "organizers gave it to him" (while organizers at 19km told me that he took himself - they started to procted individual nutrition more carefully). Only 1/3 litre of electrolytes were left at this point, so ran with a bottle and drank bit by bit for some 4km. Some 18km - surprise suprise - 1st precramp in left shin. And the end of 2nd loop started to feel those precramps more often, in both legs. Second loop did in 54'45''. In the beginning of third loop, on the bridge, even tried massage legs, but it barelely helped - after some 0,5km suffered first good cramp attack to left shin. Tried too use safety-pin, but it didn't help much. After 1km more - another cramp attack to left shin, now - very strong indeed. Jabed with safety-pin to again, suffered for some time and tried to move again, but quite slowly, because had to beware cramp attacks. Finished 3rd loop in 64'48''. 4th loop moved more or less without cramp attacks, but started to feel small weakness, so moved very slowly - some 6:30/km and needed to use my strong will to move forward. 1st refreshment point in the middle loop refreshed me, but after 1 km more started to feel very strange pain - felt that some two front parallel muscles in both thighs became very tense, the feeling was that both legs will tear apart. Was lucky that after few hundred meters there was wet sponges point, so cooled down both thighs with cold water and that instantly helped. 2km until finish - just another extremely intense cramp attack in left shin - have never seen muscles moving in the form of sea wave. In the last km stopped many times because cramp completely prevented running. The last intense attack happened some 100meters before finish - couldn't do anything, I looked pathetic I guess.
So now I can surely add a seal to my passport - "Marathon is not for you". GPS counted some 42.7km. Burned some 3076 kcal. One positive thing - I still can walk :)
