Orienteering race 1:11:08 [4]

British Champs at Dalegarth. Disappointed that it wasn't as technical as I expected. Either that or I can now read contours which I couldn't when we last ran here. Went up the left hand re-entrant just before 1 so took a few seconds to work out where I was. Fine up until 8 when I dropped down too low. Luckily when I turned round I saw the control. At 13 I went straight down the hill as it was grotty underfoot and so had to struggle through until I reached the track. Pleased with my result as it's the first W60L I've done in a Championships for a while. Was 14th out of 40 when I left.

Orienteering race 1:08:28 [3]

BOK Trot at New Beechenhurst in the Forest of Dean. The wettest day of the already wet year! It was raining when we left home and rained non-stop, with gale force winds on the way over. Was still raining when we left - just about 15 minutes without rain around Tidworth and it's still raining now at 8.30pm. As it was slippery I tended to take path routes whenever feasible to avoid slipping on wet branches. When I came across a stream, just before number 2, in very full flow I had problems. Went to left, but too tricky. Luckliy after a detour of about 50m to my right the stream emerged from under the ground and I was able to get across the bank above it. Not enjoyable at all. Reached my attack point going into 4, but went up the path before I turned onto the block of land. Must have gone at too high an angle as when I found a control in a depression I made a wrong assumption and continued to climb up the slope. Eventually realised that nothing fitted and noticed people down below me. must have lost about 4 or 5 minutes here. Went too high above the re-entrant at 5 and had to drop down into the feature. From 6 to 7 it was very slippery . I veered off to the north, but corrected myself down a very steep, grotty slope. Pretty fast terrain after that. Glad there was a bridge type crossing the stream between 7 and 8 as it was in full spate.I went along a track between 8 and 9 to avoid crossing stream. Luckily the ditches en route between 10 and 11 were not too deep. Pleased to have got round in one piece.
