Orienteering race (middle) 51:05 [4] *** 4.9 mi (10:25 / mi)
spiked:14/16c

Open woods. I was doing pretty well at the beginning and I looked ahead to the first long leg 7-8 and saw that I could go around on a ride and a trail. Coming out of 7, I was just following the red line and it was open all the way along the red line. I was thinking to myself "why would I take the ride, it is fast running all along the red-line. Only when I got near the control did I realize that I was following the line from 12 to 13 ( 7 and 12 where the same control). What made the error fatal was that these two legs were the long legs. Made another error later (on the 12-13 leg ! ) when I lost focus and didn't see the 13 flag.

Orienteering race (classic) 1:17:07 [4] *** 7.4 km (10:25 / km)
spiked:13/14c

Only major mistake was C11: went L around final green hill and didn't turn R enough and ran down to the wrong marsh. Should have gone R there.

Mark V leaves us with a cautionary trail (seen on MrWonderful's log); for C2 it looks like he tried to bounce off the field edge and somehow didn't go far enough W and went N and S before he relocated at the HQ property. I was slightly L of red line on C2. The areas in the woods mapped as open were useful for navigating, but too overgrown to help with speed.

I was literally on my last leg on the last leg. Apparently, my calf can only handle 75 minutes at a time. Do I dare sign up for Billygoat?

Note

Stop to look for Morels on the way home. No luck. Is the season past?

WInsplits must use a different algorithm than AP to estimate mistakes.
It doesn't count C13 as a mistake at all, but I definitely missed 2 or even 3 minutes there. A variation of parallel error, I was supposed to contour around the crown of a hill, but I was a little low and got turned around a spur. There was a little reentrant, twin to the goal feature, waiting for me there. Another minute or two lost at C9, a control in the green and I couldn't decide what to do with it. Very sloppy and slow on the last 3 controls, probably due to fatigue.

If I am going to spend so much time on orienteering, I should make sure that I do it right.

Leg held up OK, but was very sore for 2 days after.

Orienteering warm up/down (fight) 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Tried out the preview map. White was fight; spent the whole time crouching through honeysuckle.

Orienteering race (classic) 58:17 [4] *** 6.0 km (9:43 / km)
spiked:15/18c

Mistakes: Overly conservative (apparently) to C2, pushed off course by green on way to C4, and lost concentration at C14 after pulling hamstring and busting eardrum.
Routes were as close to redline as possible, except for C2 (already mentioned), and C6 (took the road).
