Running 43:41 [3] 4.82 mi (9:04 / mi)
shoes: Kayano XVIII

Los Gatos Creek Trail. 34 degrees; run in tights. As usual, do well in cold weather once I get going. Started off with Liane and Mark, running about 9:35 pace, very easy. On my own on the way back, ran at 8:25 pace without really pushing it. Felt quite strong even at the end. PR by 1:07. (However, have run faster on that part of the Creek Trail as part of longer runs.)

Start and finish at the overpass behind California Cafe

Walking (Course setting) 2:00:00 [2] 3.0 mi (40:00 / mi) +100m 36:15 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3

Joe Grant. Walked/jogged the Brown-Green course I'm setting for Feb 17. Moved several controls, made notes for another couple of dozen map corrections. Took two hours all told, but I figure I was only moving for half of that.

Delayed an hour by rain, but it cleared up completely by the time I was done.

Hungry and tired after course setting, but felt like I hadn't really gotten much exercise, so decided to run the course all-out (!). Wow, that was fun! Didn't need to read the map, just blasted through the terrain (though I got pretty tired on the few hills that are on the course). Stopped 3 or 4 times for maybe :45 to check some map detail; didn't count those stops in my time - obviously, those little rests helped. It'll be interesting to see what the fastest time is on the 17th.

Running 59:40 [3] 5.52 mi (10:49 / mi)
shoes: Kayano 19's

Skyline, with Louise. Quite chilly at the start, but got pretty warm as we ran. Louise, who hasn't run much over the past month, expected she was going to run slow, but she actually set a pretty good pace, though she faded a little over the last couple of miles. We turned at the 7.32 mi mark because she only wanted to do 5 miles. I ran an additional front-of-house loop at the end. We started out a little faster than I would have, but I was very strong at the end.

Note
(rest day)

Last night we spent from 3:30 to 9:30 - no break for dinner - buying a car to replace Louise's dead Passat. Nasty. We wound up with a car we hadn't really decided we wanted for more money than we intended to spend. We actually went there only for a test drive, but I think what happened was that neither of us ever want to go back to a car dealership again and it seemed (at the moment) that just hanging on through this ordeal was better than having to do it again. Pretty miserable night's sleep afterwards, so tried to lay low today (though still went out in the afternoon for several hours of errands).

The whole 9 yards: mat, theraband, hips, thigh adductors, weights. Intense, as usual. Veritgo hit several times even while I was holding my head up.

Orienteering race 39:23 [5] *** 5.6 km (7:02 / km) +12m 6:57 / km
spiked:10/11c shoes: Kayano XVIII

Stanford O-race put on by Rex ("Punch and Run Klub"). Sunny and cool. Counted it as 11 controls since you had to navigate to the finish (which was no more visible than the rest of the controls, each of which was marked by a very small bag).

Map and Winsplits available.

Start at 10:45 after a long warm-up (to get my left butt loose). Felt sluggish for the first four controls, but ran well after that. Did a very good job of using my magnifier on the run, reading detail very efficiently. Only stopped once to look at the map more carefully, right before climbing the ramp to the courtyard where #7 was (concerned that it might be a multi-level situation and wanted to make sure).

Lost :10 or :15 on #1: The man made object was a small, hard to see pipe, and at that point I didn't know that the bags would be tiny and, in this case, on the ground.

Only other error, a big one, was at #8. Though on the online map the control circles appear as bright red, on the actual map they were dull purple. Since the circle for #8 was almost completely over a building, I didn't see it. What I actually was the lower loop for the numeral 8, which appeared to be centered on a thicket, so that's where I headed! Mighty confused when I got there because the parking lot shown on the map is now a big building. Took about 2 minutes of great confusion before I spotted the control circle around the courtyard.

A lovely day and an excellent reminder of why I love urban sprints!

Running warm up/down 17:00 [2] 1.7 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Kayano XVIII

Jogged over from Town & Country to the start (across from Angell Field) and then around a bit. After ten minutes, was eager to get going, so punched the start and ran about 50m - and realized my left butt muscle wasn't loose yet. So, jogged/ran for another 7 minutes before starting again.
