The time and result aren't great, but I really enjoyed this and, at times, was back orienteering well. At others I was, as ever, shambolic, but the enjoyment far outweighed this.
I hit 1 & 2 with little hesitation and got into the map, but obviously got a bit cocky and lost 3.5-4mins on 3 (a 1min leg) - as ever poor direction out of control. I even relocated early on and still couldn't find it!
I then produced enough bananas to overflow a fruit bowl (7, 8, 20, 22, 23, 20-30s on each), overshot 12 (15s) and drifted off-line to 15 (30-40sec)

Managed to stab myself in the back (nice hole in my ShUOC top and me) at the penultimate control. I'm blaming this, along with hitting the last control in a big pack and having to wait for the punch, on Faz beating me by 1 second. A good demonstration of nav ability and running ability (pah!) balancing each other out somewhat (although he is looking very slimline currently)

Ran out to club. The advertised session (1000,800,600,400,200) didn't seem much but planned to push it for some speed work. As ever, the sesh put on the facebook page was a week out, and the track was full of kids and a plodding group. So a tempo it was. Although with everyone into marathon taper it was a very slow tempo at 6:30min/mile. Oh well, miles in the bank and felt good throughout, keeping an OK pace up on the way out and back. 4min/km during the tempo felt really easy with the group, felt like I could do that all day (although by the time I got home I was ravenous and fading)

longer than anticipated but made up somewhat for doing nothing yesterday

feeling wiped, perked up after dinner but I'm pretty sure I'm eating enough during the day. At least my belly says I am!

Running - Trail hills 1:29:53 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (55:53 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (16:00 @5) 17.46 km (5:09 / km) +450m 4:34 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: NB749 Trail

Hills on Ingleby Incline. I think this is my first proper hills set in 2+ years.
2min up, 1min down jog recovery. Give or take (gate got in the way at the end of one, but made up for the lost 7secs later on). Ended up doing 8, with the last min of the last rep on the flat, running off the top.

felt paaants, felt like I was bent 90deg at the hip and shuffling about. On rep 6(?) I even walked for a couple of steps, before a melodramatic call of anguish from myself got me going again.

Then out and back to Urra Moor as it was rude not to (further away than I remembered) and back along the top (again, longer than I remember!) in the gloom.

There's only one way to get better uphill and it's something I've neglected far too much.

Tough session solo - although finding out Todd was doing similar will spur me on next time!

slightly longer than planned recovery as I was feeling OK. Out to Newport bridge and back over the lumps. Legs ached in different places throughout but moving OK

Pisspoor. And ona terrain type I had 'mastered' last year. Had my pants well and truly pulled down.
Still, another beautiful day in the lakes, and a Simnel-cake like High Street range reflected in a glassy Haweswater offered some respite for the weary.
Legs felt fine after the race, but as soon as I started I was struggling up anything with a vague gradient. They came back to me a little bit but the longer legs and climbs were a struggle.

Right, on to the post-mortem.
1 - dived straight into the terrain when should have stayed on path, too low. 20s?
3 - very hesitant and muddled up the hills I was contouring around at one point. Then stopped on an earlier group of small crags. 60-90s.
6 - the coup de grace. Lost 6.5min at least, way to the SW on the hill and was postholing through snow. I'd found it hard up the hill at the start of the leg (went right a bit in a futile effort to save height) then didn't check direction exiting the marsh.

Then took me a bit of a while to get going again - slow across to 8 and uphill to 11. 12 seemed a bit low and had to drop to it.
13 - set a good bearing out of 12, but passed an unmapped boulder on a marsh which positioned me further up the hill so contoured below the control, bounced off small gully. 60s
Cruised around the rest, and splits hold up until a slight miss in the circle at 21 (wrong crag, 20s) and getting muddled mid-way to 22 (20s).

The positives? Direction out of controls and compass (when I used it, that is) much better than last week.
