Pisspoor. And ona terrain type I had 'mastered' last year. Had my pants well and truly pulled down.
Still, another beautiful day in the lakes, and a Simnel-cake like High Street range reflected in a glassy Haweswater offered some respite for the weary.
Legs felt fine after the race, but as soon as I started I was struggling up anything with a vague gradient. They came back to me a little bit but the longer legs and climbs were a struggle.
Right, on to the post-mortem.
1 - dived straight into the terrain when should have stayed on path, too low. 20s?
3 - very hesitant and muddled up the hills I was contouring around at one point. Then stopped on an earlier group of small crags. 60-90s.
6 - the coup de grace. Lost 6.5min at least, way to the SW on the hill and was postholing through snow. I'd found it hard up the hill at the start of the leg (went right a bit in a futile effort to save height) then didn't check direction exiting the marsh.
Then took me a bit of a while to get going again - slow across to 8 and uphill to 11. 12 seemed a bit low and had to drop to it.
13 - set a good bearing out of 12, but passed an unmapped boulder on a marsh which positioned me further up the hill so contoured below the control, bounced off small gully. 60s
Cruised around the rest, and splits hold up until a slight miss in the circle at 21 (wrong crag, 20s) and getting muddled mid-way to 22 (20s).
The positives? Direction out of controls and compass (when I used it, that is) much better than last week.
