Mountain biking warm up/down 7:01 [1] 1.19 mi (5:54 / mi)

To Newton Hill to place streamers and try out UsynligO on the courses I set.

Mountain biking 38:56 [2] 1.8 mi (21:38 / mi)
ahr:140 max:160

Loop 1. Some riding on the flats, some hike-a-biking along steep hills and when bushwhacking. Pauses at the control on the clock to hang streamers. Moving time 7 minutes less.

Mountain biking 34:40 [1] 1.46 mi (23:44 / mi)
ahr:138 max:160

Loop 2. More hike-a-biking than on Loop 1, less riding. Getting tired, too. Another 7 minutes on the clock spent hanging streamers.

Mountain biking warm up/down 9:26 [1] 1.32 mi (7:09 / mi)
ahr:148 max:159

Newton Hill to home. Pretty whipped.

Orienteering 1:57:00 [1] 4.3 mi (27:13 / mi)
shoes: Falcon

Middlesex Fells 4.3km course. No UsynligO and no flags meant there were a couple of places where I attacked a control from a couple of points to make sure I had been to the right place.

Orienteering 2:48:00 [1] **** 6.0 mi (28:00 / mi)

High Rock long course. Left my camelbak at home. (Doh). So my pace was maybe a little slower than if I had been hydrated properly. Warm temps, ground conditions drier than in recent past, according to the Google Doc. I had some problems getting UsynligO to register that I was at control #2. After this point, I changed to Score-O mode and increased the control radius to 10m, with better results.

This map needs some work. For instance, from 6 to 7, at the S tip of the map, the land southwest of the stone wall is marked private, and should be shown as Out of Bounds or in olive green. If it had been, I would not have chosen the straight-ish route choice.

Some other places I thought the rock was undermapped. There was a distinctive cairn near #14 that was not on the map.

Gay City State Park medium course. Some legs were right on, good map contact, good planning. A leg or two I lost contact and flailed a little. Good layering so I was warm enough. Wore waterproof boots, so I didn't mind stepping in the abundant water features or squishy mud. Paused the clock to take a couple of pictures.

Cycling 56:39 [1] 7.68 mi (7:23 / mi)
ahr:148 max:167

Vernon (CT) rail-trail. Plus some wandering when the trail met the street and I lost it. But I found a scenic spillway on a lake and took pictures. The trail had some crusty snow, some fat tire tracks, some regular MTB tracks, but would probably be more enjoyable once it's thawed and dried out. Riding on the sometimes slush was tiring.

Cycling 25:00 [1] 4.5 mi (5:33 / mi)

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

Baldwin Hill short course, start to #9, at which point I bailed. Boots were a better choice than O shoes. UsynligO lost contact midway, and I didn't find streamers after the 1st control, so after about 90-105 minutes (true time unknown since I fumbled the Garmin buttons) I bailed for the finish.

One upside. After the difficulty I had hearing the noises from the phone at Nobscot, with the phone at my thigh, I found and used a sleeve around my neck intended to hold one's passport. With UsynligO, the phone was close enough to my ears to make the tones more definite.
