Arms felt a bit flat in the warm up so I took it out easy off the start, choosing the right end of the line and getting on the front row menat that I was still travelling OK after the first 500m when I round myself on the rear quarter of Old Nemesis Pete, he was getting pushed right and I was getting squeezed left so we came together and I got my blade wedged between the boats. I had to really pull to get my blade back which nearly sent me out the other side of the boat but a big brace saved me. Then I spent the next minute berating him and telling him he had to let me win. He later said he felt really guilty about it until he turned around and saw it was me. nice.
I fell of the back in those shenanigans then a pack of about 12 paddlers started to creep away.in the interests of pacing I let them go but a convenient boat wash before the first corner kept me in contact. the group spread out down Blackwall Reach and I swapped between wash hanging and surfing boat waves down to the traffic bridge. After the bridge the boat washes started getting bigger and I had to throw another big brace and collect a boat full of water as I was overtaking Wil Acworth, which he found amusing.
Out to the heads was OK if a little bumpy but we turned the corner and a brick wall slammed into me. see if you can pick the turn on the speed graph below.......
It wasn't actully that bad early on as I was in a group of 4 wash hanging, though I did manage to bump into the other three in the space of 2 seconds at one time. They didn't appreciate it much. but the group split up then the bloke on the front started playing silly buggers so I let him go. '
After the turn buoy at Leightons the lack of long paddles recently really hit home. I just struggled to hold speed and my arms wouldn't extend. all a bit shit. I lost 7 places between there and the finish including a vet in a V10 sport and a small chick in a Robberg. sigh.
finished 55th overall, 17th category, chicked twice, plasticised twice.
The important results were I was 1:26 before Andrew (compared to 5 mins in the Classic Paddle) and I beat Frenchie. which is something that not all blokes who paddle molokais can say.
cough, rabbit, cough
Elbow was OK during the race, but achey afterwards and did not enjoy moving through 150-170 degrees. icing it now.
