Note

I should add a note about the bikes here. Boden is an old military town and the event has made a bunch of military bikes available for rental. Unf I missed out. But they are amazing bikes - painted military green, mosty steel and I'm guessing from WWII. I picked one up and it felt like about 20kg.

Bit sore and tired to start with today, but loosened up ok after a while. Caught the bus to the event today. The camping group started first thing today as they are off on their way to Helsinki today, so I only saw Tamsin at our spot at the arena after she finished her race. Thor and Jon had started about 1.5hrs before me. Today I managed to beat them both - but only by 3 mins on Thor so she takes the 2 day challenge by 8 mins. Jon had a bit of a blowout, so me next.

Same arena but a different couple of hills although very similar terrain. A bit more time spent on steep hillsides this time. After a 3k walk to the start I took off and promptly jarred my lower shin on a root or rock and suffered for a bit but it looks like it's just a scratch and a bruise now. I decide to take quite a lot of care about where I'm putting my footing. I contour over to a track and find the right spot to head back up the hill to the control happy with my route choice. Head up and over to on a long leg to 2, find a track mid way and follow that to the end and then down and along the otherside of the hill where the rocks start again and it's granite all around on a steepish hillside. I identify a large cliff ok and head straight to the control with success.

3 is a contour along a really steep granite hillside. At first I thought about going up and over, but saw someone run off at a contour at great speed and thought that might be a good idea. I think it was an ok choice although quite slow and arduous, wth somewhat slippery wet mossy granite for half the time. Kept in contact with the map and with great relief found the control cleanly. It would have been really hard work trying to relocate on such a steep hill side. I climb on all fours up and out and am happy I didn't try approach it from the top - going down such steepness would have made any mistake quite costly.

Up to the top and then over a light ridge and then down a couple of contours down to a shallow gully where I find 4. Then a fairly long but fast run back along the side of the hill, past the saddle between two hills and then I decided to climb an additional 5 contours or so to the top of the knoll which paid off as it was all big slabby granite everywhere and really hard to make sense of things. Went down carefully from the top and picked out a couple of features to find the control ok.

To 6 was over the ridge and down to the otherside, picking up a bunch of people now running ot a bunch of controls in this area. Down to a flat area, thick underfoot and few features, found a tiny marsh and relocated to 6.

7 was only 150m but entered a massive granite area where I lost contact and had to muck around climbing to the top of the local high point which was about 40m from the control - down around some big boulders at the top of a shallow gully. Lost a few minutes but it could have been worse. It's amazing how many people were all milling around and then we all converge on the control together.

8 and onwards are down on the sandy, tracky, open forest flats. A little bit of interest as 11 and 12 are amongst some small lakes, steep hills, thick forest and tank barriers - giant pathways with 1m jagged rocks placed in rows.

Ran into Henry a bit after finishing, he had a light sprain on his ankle.

The elite's do a sprint in town tonight at 6 and tomorrow is a rest day.
