Walking Pennine Route Day 2 8:00:00 [3] **** 26.45 km (18:09 / km)
slept:5.0

Very enjoyable hike from Malham to er... Setttle!

[n.b. complex technical intensity as the path really didn't exsist in most parts - navigating off a 1:63,000 map with poor visibility and only a thumb compass!]

Set of at 7.30am to get the best of the sunrise on Malham cove, very pleasant for the first hour as lots of people had trodden down the path ahead of us. Seems like many did not venture past the cove so the walk began to get very hard on the top of the hills. Found Malham tarn easily and proceeded towards Fountains Fell. Once on the hill we soon lost the track due to half a meter of snow covering the slope! Thought it would be best to just scale the hill and head down the other side towards Pen-y-Ghent - too icy - very hard underfoot and getting quite tired. Took a simple compass bearing back to the road and walked a very enjoyable 10km back towards Settle taking in the stunning scenery.

Acheing legs but really enjoyed the experience. Have decided to head back in the summer to complete the Malham - Pen-y-Ghent - Horton in Ribblesdale section of the route. Silly ego!
