Jukola 2010, Kytäjä, 3rd leg.
While I was warming up I heard an interview of the top 2nd leg guys and they all said it was top3 most difficult night orienteering track they had ever done. This plus Pexi's (our 2nd leg guy) words at the change over made me take the first controls really easy.
RG
Route (btw, I heard that the RG might be online only next week. Pirilä is on some trip right now)
▷-1 the race started all good, not perfect. I made a secure but not the fastest choice to #1 and found it spot on. Heard LOADS of what's the code of the cp / what's your code / where's my code / do they still make Code alcopop beverages?
1-2 a bit easier one and it went well
2-3 it came close I would've run pass the cp from the right but realised it was the top of the hill right there
3-4 2/3 done of the leg, some guy decides to run behind me and chat like we've known for years. My focus was off for a while and first mistake was done. Got rid off this dude, navigated myself back to the map and headed towards the cp
4-5 easy peasy
5-6 didn't fully execute my route choice but still pretty good
6-7 a.k.a the black leg. First of all, I have to say this was most likely the most difficult night orienteering leg I've ever done. I realised this straight away when I opened the map to see the whole thing. Like all the way to #6, there was no-one to follow so I had to cope on my own. First mistake was that I decided to trust on my new compass and tried to stay on the purple line (should've gone from the left with less climbing and easier navigation). Second one was to get frustrated to the really slow terrain and thus the temptation of a path drifting little bit to the right got too big. Little bit after half way I got a feeling "this might not end well..". And soon after I was 100% sure of it. I spent maybe 2min on a top of a hill in a race of 1500 teams and I saw and heard no one. And I mean NO ONE! So at least I knew I'm not even close to the purple line. Took compass bearing to the cp again and corrected a bit to the left (cause I had a feeling I'm a bit to the right). Saw some light and heard noises, but they were gone when I came to the "scene". New noises, but same thing. Then came to a control that seemed to be a radio one. It was between cliffs facing each other. Thought there can't be too many of these on this area of the map but calculated few in an instant. Didn't still know where I was but now I had narrowed the possibilities down. Little more wandering around / collecting keys and I finally knew my position. I was really relieved but also extremely disappointed to myself. I've been one of the most loud talkers of our sub-100 goal and I knew this mistake ruined this possibility...
7-8 what I'm still proud of, is what happened next. Normally I would've either tried to correct the mistake by increasing the speed or spending my energy in cursing my shitty navigational skills. This leg was top notch executing from my behalf. Couldn't have done better.
8-9 ditto. Eventhough there were some organisers standing 20m right from the cp I went through a small thicket and knew the control is right after it
9-10 again a bit easier one to navigate but surely not to run. A lot of loose stones, branches and undergrowth. Almost made a mistake right at the end but little ole' standing&reading helped.
10-11 easy peasy
11-12 ditto
12-13 made moderately big but fast mistake. It tells something about the terrain that I had no clue about the lake left of me until now afterwards.
13-14 could be one of my best splittime positions.
14-15 on the road from 11 to 12 I took a climpse of this leg. Due to 6-7 I was a bit afraid of this but the legs after it had gave me little self confidence back. Now I had a plan and the lucky thing was that it was the same plan that "some" of the other guys had taken before me. Maybe third of the way I used pretty big path made by the 1-3 leg guys. Right at the end my concentration stopped for a while and I dashed to the first control I saw.
15-16 first leg I saw many people. And everyone was going to the same control
16-17 again a bit easier one. At least the first 4/5 of it.
17-18 another "yay, i see a control" type of dash. Navigated back to the map quickly and found the control fast.
18-F -
My thoughts of the race are split. First thing on my mind is of course the massive mistake on 6-7 and how it destroyed the dream of sub-100. But on the other hand I'm really satisfied to the rest. Especially the end was good. I lost 10 min from 5.2km to finish (11.3km). Actually I'm pretty sure this was the case from ~4.2km (#7 was at 4.2km) also. But all in all, I sucked. If LS-37 IV H50 guy wins me, I should've been in the fifth team...
