Black Mountains MBO Series - #1
Pandy nr Abergavenny
3.5hr MTBO race with all 4 seasons in 3.5hrs! Rain, snow, sleet and sunshine.
I thought the course was clearable when I planned the course but had planned on dropping one if the time was short.
Was I wrong! I stuck to the original plan until the 45th minute where I decided to drop a 30 pointer (#6) and collect in on the return leg as I thought the route might be muddy and slow. As it turned out I didn't have time on the return leg to collect it :-(
I then lost 10mins searching for CP#7 and ended up descending 60m to far and 300m horizontal. So I had to double back :-(
I went past the next CP (#13) by 300m and had to double back. Lost a further 3mins here.
I was aware of the time I'd lost so I decided to drop into Grwynne valley to collect CP#15 and CP#19 and dropping CP#17 (10 points) and CP#18 (20 points).
I was a little unlucky on my route choice from CP#16 to CP#21. The obvious choice was a bridleway but I knew it was a hike a bike as I'd done it on the Black Mountains fell race a few years ago. I decided to double back from CP#16 and head up a series of fire roads shown on the map. However they didn't exist! So I ended up hike-a-biking through a sheep trod through the trees. I lost 9 mins to Ifor Powell on this leg who took the most direct route. I'll know next time!
After CP#21, there was a great descent off Crug Mawr and I was fortunate not to fly past CP#23. I was beginning to get concerned about time now as I had only 1hr after descending the mountain.
On the return leg I dropped CP#14 (10 pointer) as I'd planned before starting. I also had to drop CP#6 (30 pointer) which was a bummer but I couldn't risk the 1km out and back plus 80m ascent.
I got really worried when I was headed off the road up the muddy path to CP#3 as it was steeper and muddier than I'd expected. And the leg from CP#3 to #2 was muddy too.
However the section after CP#2 was road :-). Then another problem :-( as I lost my dibber. I got to CP1 and it was no longer on my finger. I decided not to head back to try and find it and just flew back to the finish and stopped my GPS 11s under the allotted time :-). I explained to the organiser that I'd lost my dibber and he said that I should go back and try and find it, which I did and found it. Luckily he credited me my actual finish time too :-)
So I got 420 compared to Ifor's 458 which wasn't too bad considering I'd lost about 25m in errors.
Something to work on in the next race.
