I have a love hate relationship with racing. I find committing to a race really hard to do because I kind of (really) dislike racing. But then once I'm racing I love it. The 8 hours of Addison Oaks was no different. In the week leading up to it I just couldn't commit so it wasn't until Friday night that I finally decided to do it.
I had gone out on the previous Wednesday to do a test run and figure out timing. I can normally do the singletrack at Addison around 28minutes at a decent pace so I figured a good target for the 8 hours was going to be 35 minutes per lap.
As in all races I started out way to hard. The goal was to keep my HR fairly low but I found it sitting around 165bpm for the majority of the first two laps. Once the excitement subsided I found it easy to keep my pace fairly consistent for the first 4 hours. After the halfway point I started to slip into a deep, dark place. Then in lap 10 I got a spike of energy and felt great....only to slip into darkness on lap 12.
I started to work on the lap times in my head and figured I could definitely get in a 14th lap. I was 7 minutes short when I rolled into the finish at 8hrs and 7mins. Had I been under 8 hours I would of been allowed to go out for another lap. I'm actually a bit happy I didn't have to go out again because that would of definitely killed me. :)
The 14 laps were good enough for 1st in 40 to 49 (out of 4). Overall I was 5th out of around 17 solo males. Couldn't be happier with my results when I look at the 4 people that beat me. They all have around 5,000 miles this year while I'm sitting at around 1200 miles.
For 1st place prizes Brent gives out some really nice monogrammed bath robes. Kind of quirky but a really nice gift.
Distance was adjusted due to some inconsistencies.
