Rogaining race (The Dark Swamp 12hr) 12:15:00 [3] 67.0 km (10:58 / km)
(sick)

Distance a guestimate for now. Planned 70km by my string, 72km by Mark's string, dropped a few controls at the end but probably still closer to 70km than 65km. Our route is up on RouteGadget which gives a dist of 67km, so I'l go with that for now.

Didn't feel too bad for the first couple of hours, but then started getting affected by the heat. We didn't want to go to the water drop at 29, but checked our water levels before 72 to make sure we'd be OK to miss it (I took extra water so we'd hopefully avoid it). Still had plenty of water when we got to 38 after 5 1/2 hours, but really needed some splashing down to cool off a bit. very glad that all four water drops we visit in the second half and a bit had heaps of water so I could cool off a bit at each one, but didn't really need to fill my water much.

After we passed Pip and Jen on the way to 38, and having seen no sign of Will and Tooms, the thought slowly started to grow that Toom's may have decided going for ice cream may have been more fun than rogaining.

Passed Juffy and Dolf as we approached 28, still no sign of Will and Tooms. Also I was struggling to keep up with Mark by now and I was expecting to be able to pick up the pace in the farm land, but the thick grass made it feel slower than the bush.

Mark suggested we drop 42, 80, 23 and do some other stuff, but I said we should stick to the plan, we were getting behind on the planned 6km/hr by now.

From 56 we decided to drop 61 and 92 and go straight on to 46 (a lucky/wise decision as it turns out. We got a bit vague approaching 78 with us coming onto a very broad section of spur, looked around a bit to the south, then moved north and Mark found it.

By now we were probably too far behind time and should have had a closer look at how long it would take to get back, the vegetation in the area 84, 67, 87, 56, 49, 78, 82 slowed us down and I was struggling big time.

We faffed about vaguely moving towards 82 eventually got obviously past it, I think we probably passed east of it after following the rock surface from the bottom of the circle up the gully. Once we were past it we had to just go (Mark had suggested when we cross the track between 78 and 82 that we dump 82 and take the track to 69, I said no let's go for it, we can run in on the track from 71).

No time to look for 71, quickly got 55, but I was only managing to run in short burst's, with major puffing between spurts of running.

We had clean nav. nearly the whole time, our huge mistake was not keeping a close track of how much we had left to do at the end, Mark may have been, but I was just hanging in for dear life.

So a definite one that got away, lost 150pts for being late, (if we'd been a second later we would have lost another 10pts to drop down to 5th). Mark mispunched 3 controls to drop another 130pts (if we weren't so late maybe we would have checked the control card and picked it up). And we missed an 80 pointer and went straight past another 70 at the end. And we only ended up 210pts behind Wil and Tooms, so plenty of improvement/things to avoid for next time. Main problem was I was trashed and never recovered from being hot early on so I wasn't concentrating and I kept telling Mark to stick to the plan when we should have cut and run or at least checked the distance to go v's time left more.

Went to work despite still being sick. No riding tomorrow, possibly no running either, only easy run if anything. But terrain loops are fun ;-(
