Orienteer (goat) 1:34:00 [3] **** 9.8 km (9:36 / km)
shoes: ORoc 10

SLOC Runt
Great course, beautiful terrain & weather.
Felt really good today, physically & mentally. Still not moving so fast but traded places with Mike E a few times to at least make it mildly competitive for him.
Great time, thanks Bill L !!

Orienteer (classic) 1:30:00 [3] **** 7.1 mi (12:41 / mi)
shoes: ORoc 10

SF Scout Ranch is really a fine area in which to run and we were also treated to good courses. I haven't exercised for over a month and it showed. Tired early and misread a feature on long leg, turned early and made run killing parallel error. Killed time and motivation so I slowed and refocussed on my navigation. Kinda enjoyed that but not so much.

Note

After the race, word got around about Tom S's. missing daughters. Apparently they went out on the white 3+ hours ago (sans shadow) and were nowhere to be found. Search was put together and I was assigned a quadrant where it was doubtful I would find them (although it was somewhat close to their course). I walked along and down a long hill toward the lake, occasionally yelling their names and standing on rocks to see if I heard any response. Oddly, I did hear what sounded like "wildlife" noises way down the hill but they sounded like squaking geese. Nevertheless I headed down toward there repeating the yell & listen routine for about 10 minutes. The noises continued and I started to doubt whether geese would make such a consistent racket. UNBELIEVABLY, I heard a whistle from that exact direction and was nearly certain it was them. I broke into full sprint for the last few hundred meters through thick brush and there they were, standing on a spit of land on the shore of the lake, off the map, 500 meters east of my control 3 earlier that day. They were both distraught and I was surprised how little (young) they were to be out there my themselves.
They calmed immediately when I said hi to them by name and told them their dad's name. I told them what an excellent job they had done making noise and asked if they would like me to lead them back to their dad. It was a loooong walk and I could not figure out how they had gotten so far off the trails but never asked them. Another searcher came by and we all walked out holding hands and making lite chit chat about what we would variously have for dinner and watch on TV later after returning to our friends & family. Thanks to cell phones, all the searchers immediately knew they had been found and a van was dispatched to drive us the last half of the way. That about ends the story but I will never forget it. What great kids, I was so proud of them.
