OUCH. Sickest trails in So Cal IMHO.
I had planned on doing the 73 mile loop, but wasn't feeling it the morning of so decided on the shorter loop. I got so lucky...
We started by heading straight up the pavement to some unnamed single track that rolled around the top, then dropped upper southridge - trail is in gnarly shape, came within 1/2" of knocking myself stupid on a 3' diameter log that sticks out over the trail. I heard after Jenz Raz wasn't so lucky; cracked helmet and bloody head.
Down May Valley fire road to Johnson Meadow (breathtaking views!), Keen Camp, behind Hurkey, Apple Canyon Road and down the highway a bit. Drink mix seemed a bit strong, but I wasn't sure if it was the cold or not (47 at the start). Luckily, it was cold enough that I was doing fine with it.
Some random double track and power line roads to traverse south, then up Thomas Mountain around mile 20 and feeling the legs a bit. Stopped to strip layers at the bottom. Climb is super boring, 8 miles of moderately steep fire road. Just: pedal, keep HR down, drink, repeat. Hit the unofficial aid station at the yellow post up top, a bit of a refill and down Ramona Trail. First time down Ramona, some techy sections in there, exposure, rocks, and switchbacks. Got a bit lost at the bottom with Luke until I spotted another rider heading back up a power line road we ripped past. Oops.
Go to shift down the cassette and nothing. Huh? Inspecting the new drivetrain and I see the return spring on the derailleur is busted and there's 15 miles left. Shit. I turned the high limit screw all the way in to give me a better gear ratio, but I'm stuck with a 3-speed. Great.
More Power Line road, out of water around 4 hours, for about 20 mins, Stopped at the Lake Hemet Market to re fill. Go to add drink mix and I can't find it in my pack. Crap. Left it in the car. Nothing to do, but get on with it....
Back up Keen Camp, Johnson Meadow and May Valley. Pretty worked by this point and walking some sections, but so is everyone else. I kept waiting for the bonk, but it never came. Yeah I could have gone faster with cals, but I moved pretty well for the circumstances.
FINALLY crest the climb, down the roads back into town and the finish at the campground.
The lucky part? Imagine if I had picked the long route and had the same problems; there are huge stretches of nothing beyond the Ramona Trail and if I had encountered the mechanical and ran out of cals, it could have been dangerous.
When I got home, I got this text from one of my guys:
"You alive? I DNF'd three miles from the finish. I crapped in the woods and then puked 2x....Layed on the side of the trail for a bit and a couple guys 4x4'in in a Jeep drove me back to town..1st DNF ever."
Just when you think you have a bad day...Can't wait for next year!
