Did not want to hijack the thread about O in New Zealand, but it got me wondering -- does anyone know whatever happened to APOC (Asia-Paacific Orienteering Championships)? Does it still exist as a biennial event? The most recent reference I could find was to a 2008 event in South Korea - but I think it was referred to in one place as being APOC; but in another as being the Asian Orienteering Championships.

Under the new IOF regional structure, and after agreement with various nations involved, APOC ceased to exist. There is an Oceania Champs and a Asian Champs, they have effectively replaced APOC but they are not quite the same thing.

Now the true Pacific Champion is the person who finishes the complete "ring of fire" (Asian, Oceania, South American and North America Championships in the same year). I think they are all open competitions, but maybe the Oceanian is only held in odd years?

North American Champs are held only in even years.

Thanks. Are orienteers from the Americas eligible for the Oceania Champs?

Welcome to run, just can't become a resident champ.

Asian Champs are even years - and open to all.
This year was Japan (in May).

2012 will be in China in early October I think. event centre will be Wuxi - about 100km inland from Shanghai.

I can definitely recommend orienteering in China. Start planning the trip now.
