Adventure Race 5:00:00 [3]
shoes: Merida Ninety-Six Team

Morning. Melbourne.

Today's race was predominately on bike, but stopping for activities along the way. Didn't get off to a great start in the treasure hunt around the Docklands shops and were on the bike a few mins down. The bikes were at the top level of a 6 storey car park, and the wet concrete was very slippery. There were bikes and riders hitting the deck all around me, including 2 on the first corner. Course when mostly along Yarra river bike paths and under the M1 to a boat shed where we did a short paddle. Kathryn and I hit the lead on the paddle and then Troy had to do a short run. We left this TA first, but got about 1km down the road before Kathryn pointed out I was missing my backpack. Doh! back to collect it and back into 3rd place. Front 3 teams all together to Caufield Race course were we did a short abseil and another treasure hunt which took a while.
Left racecourse on bikes, but then found we had to search for the next CP somewhere on the race course. We ran anticlockwise for 3/4 of a lap in soft sand and cycling shoes. To find more teams back in front- not happy. The next house or so saw the top 4 leapfront each other depending on how hard it was to find the CP and how fast you could eat a bag of hot chips and potato cakes. We got to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and had to play basketball then jump of the 7m diving tower. This is where the race changed. Troy always had the potential to be a hinderance, and after 20min standing on the tower it looked like our race was over. Fortunately Jon Sutcliff in the other team also wasn't going to jump, called the organisers to argue the point and we were able to leave after I jumped a 2nd time. Absolutely classic de Haas moment!!
Anyway we were at least 15mins down but the first team struggled with a dodgey control in Westgate park and we caught them, and caught a men's team at the last control near docklands and finally finished in the lead after 5hrs.
We won the first prize of a paid trip to Perth in February for the Rat Race there. Not sure if Troy will continue with his AR career but he did a bloody good job apart from the lack of balls. Kathryn was good as usual and looking back now I'm pretty happy with how I felt. I think I've recovered quite well now.
