MTB Cycling (Zurich) 2:05:00 [2]
slept:9.0

On Remy's Gary Fisher again. Much cooler temp today, but then rained a bit too. Headed from Lechenhalde thru Oerikon to Zurichberg. Spent about an hour riding around trails, thought it wouldn't be that interesting but found some cool track up on top. Finished on some trails in Kaferberg. Legs felt ok cycling, but tired after 90mins.

Note

Well i well and truly felt the marathon when i got up this morning. Legs stiff and tight, and all over generally body soreness.

slept:9.0 weight:66kg (rest day)

I feel surprisingly good today. Legs not too sore, and my appetite was back in a big way.
Travelled to Zurich and tried to get on an earlier flight home but the plane was full. Bugger, another day in Zurich...

Running race (Swiss Alpine Marathon) 3:46:54 [5] 42.2 km (5:23 / km) +1890m 4:24 / km
shoes: Salomon XA 3D Pro

Stayed last night with Dieter Wolf near Davos. Leave home at 7.30 in time to watch the start of the Multisport and 78km races in the main arena. Then caught train to Bergun which took 70mins and was very scenic.
Race- Started with almost continuous uphill for 15.8km, 1365m to 2632m at Keschhutt. I was very conservative for the first hour, and let Andy go with the lead pack. Pushed a bit more as i approached the top of the hill. First split 93.37 (2.21 behind Andy) in 13th place.
Then followed a steep rocky descent which i pushed hard on for 15mins or so and caught Andy and a few others. Legs started to feel it a bit at the bottom of the hill, and the 2nd large climb was very tough. Steeper, and much colder than the first climb, it was in clouds and raining so I was cold by the top at 2606m and 23.8km. Andy dropped off slightly near the top of the hill.
I put on a plastic raincoat which helped me warm up on the descent. Again i felt great on the downhill and pulled in a few people. Again feeling tired by the next food stop at 28.1km where Dieter was waiting to cheer us on.
The last 14km really dragged on. There weren't many distance markers so i had no idea have far to go. Just kept rolling down the gentle hills, but absolutely no forward momentum on the flats. Got caught by a guy with 4km to go, and again with 1.5 to go but there was nothing i could do about it. Happy to get to the finish line in 7th. Andy was 10th in 3.49. We were 1st and 2nd in 25-29yr age class.
After the race I felt very sick in the stomach and could hardly eat or drink for the rest of the night. The 4 nurofens, 2 magnesium tablets, 2 caffeine tablet and 2 gels i ate during the race may have contributed? Fortunately the knee pain was overcome with adrenaline and drugs so i never felt too uncomfortable.
Great race. Look forward to doing it again. Good result considering i had no expectations.

Running (Davos) 39:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon XA 3D Pro

Pre race limber up with Andy from Dieter Wolf's in Clavadel near Davos. Right knee quite sore particularly downhills. Haven't run all week, but walking with heavy pack seemed to have flared it up.

Road Cycling (Zurich) 1:00:00 [2]

Sheltered from the heat wave at Remy's in Basel. Finally headed out at 1730 on Remy's Gary Fisher into Zurich to get the blood pumping. Great to see everyone swimming and sunbaking on any bit of water or grass.
Felt a bit strange to be on the bike again. Only pushed up the last hill, otherwise i just cruised.

Swimming (Zurichsee) 10:00 [1]

Couldn't resist a swim in Zurichsee during my cycle. Very warm and relaxing.

Inline Skating 30:00 [3]

After ride i headed up to the uni from Remy's before the storm came. Legs felt so tired and weak. I still have no idea how to stop. Will probably throw in the towel tomorrow and pull out of the multisport race on sat in Davos, and do the 42km mountain run instead (same as Andy). Skating isn't that hard, but climbing 435m over 12km has psyched me out a bit.

(sick) (rest day)

Finally a rest day... I needed it. But not the best night sleep.
Woke up in a jail in Zermatt. If your anticipating a great story then i'm sorry to disappoint. "disturbing the peace' or 'drunk and disorderly' is a about as far as it goes. Maybe Andy can come up with an interesting story but i was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When the cops came up behind me i didn't bother to run because i thought they were going for someone else since i had done nothing. They claimed i was making too much noise but there was hundreds of people leaving a club so what did they expect? Anyway when they had me in cuffs my chances of making a break had gone and i didn't help my causes by telling the head cop what i thought of his accusations.
Woke up at 9.15 (no watch or phone and no outside light) and banged until the cop came (different one to previous night). He said i couldn't leave until i paid 600 Swiss francs ($660). He had my wallet with my drivers license and Keycard but i told him it was a credit card so i had to go back to campground in Tasch to get my keycard. He let me on the train at 10am and was expecting me back at Zermatt on the 10.42am or his mate in Tasch were gonna find me and it would be 2 nights in the slammer. Got back to campground and with Andy and Matts help i packed up quick smart and caught the 10.42. That is the 10.42 to Brig, not Zermatt. So i sacrificed the keycard and license for freedom.
I've been a fugitive for 5 days, i'm now in Zurich. I had to head back to my safebox in the Gemeinshaft Bank to pick up my passports and cash before splitting this country. If noone hears from me by next Tuesday then i am either stuck in customs, or had to head to India to stay under the radar a bit.

Time to step it up a gear so i finally plucked up the courage to skate up the hill to Zermatt. It was bloody hot and bloody hard work up the steep part but i was happy to make it.

Inline Skating 45:00 [2]

1st time on skates for over 10 years but i have commited to a multisport version of the Swiss Alpine marathon in 9days- 25km mtb, 12km inline skate, 42km mountain marathon.
I have borrowed some super fast 5 wheeled skates from Marc Lauenstein (Swisscheese). They go fast, and i'm ok on the flat but have no idea how to stop. I'm very scared about the race, but it is all up hill so hopefully stopping won't be an issue.

Note

Rest day for Swiss 6. Caught gondola up to Klein Matterhorn 3883m or something big. Looked in an ice cave walked on the snow a bit and then waited for ages in the queue to come back down.

Orienteering race (Swiss 6) 58:39 [5] *** 6.8 km (8:37 / km) +480m 6:22 / km
shoes: VJ Twister

Etappe 2- Grunsee- Riffelalp
6.8km 460m climb. Start 2285m, finish 2235m.
41st. 58.39, winner Baptiste Rollier 47mins
Early start today so I made sure I was on the first train at 8am back up to Riffelalp on the Grondergrat bahn. Terrain a bit different, trees on the lower parts, open grass on the hire slope with some very stepp climbs and big cliffs. Cautious start, spent a lot of time slipping on the wet grass. Hit 1-7 well. Tired on the climb to 8 and missed 20secs to the right. Lost about a 60secs on 9, and was caught 4mins by a Finn at #11. Led him on the long #12 and 13 but he was easily better on the rougher long grass/fell so I just hung on from 14 to 21 which was easy nav but tough physically. Tried to take a slightly alternate route to 22, didn’t work out and I lost 45secs, and lost about 15secs to the last control. Much better run than yesterday and happy to crack top 50. Winning time was amazing, over 2mins in front of 2nd.

Running (Riffelalp to Grondergrat) 1:40:00 [3] +800m
shoes: Salomon XA 3D Pro

After the race Andy and i ran/walked when it was too steep from Riffelalp finish area up to top of Grondergrat, over 800m climbing.

Orienteering race (Swiss 6) 1:03:00 [5] ****
slept:8.0 shoes: VJ Twister

Etappe 1- Grondergrat
After driving 800km from Rome to Zermatt last night I slept in a bit before heading to Brig to drop off the hire car. Started at 12.52 so thought I had plenty of time. After having trouble finding the Hertz depot I missed the only decent train back to Zermatt so I had to catch train to Visp, then hitch 3x to get back to the campground, quickly pack my bag run to Tasch stn to see train depart. Wait 19mins for next train, 15mins to Zermatt then change to Gornergrad train, wait 15mins, 40mins on train. Hop off when I see the Finish area, but quickly hop back on because the start is 2 more stops up the hill. Dump my bag and run 800m back down the hill. Fall over and break my trusty 8 y.o. Silva Jet 6. NOT HAPPY. Finally get to start. 80mins late. They were packing up but they managed to find a map and I proceeded to lose 3mins on the first control.
8.4km 340m climb. The start was at 2910m and finish at 2575m. WOW what a terrain. Not a tree in site. Rocky moraine and steep grassy slopes with jagged cliffs.
Got 2 and 3 ok, but again dropped too low to 4 and lost another 2mins. Felt ok running down the hills, but when I noticed myself climbing back over 2900m I understood why I felt a bit tired. Missed a few other controls so it wasn’t a good day but admittedly made harder by lack of compass. Ran about 63mins, but officially 2hrs23mins.

WRE and 4th day- Pretty good run. Steady start and started to push on long leg. Got caught by a norwegian (who won) but lost him when we reached the cloverleaf and i made 1min mistake. Tired towards the end and suffered with no drinks and was a bit sloppy in the last few difficult controls.

Orienteering race (Italian 5 days) 1:06:58 [5] 7.9 km (8:29 / km) +440m 6:38 / km
slept:8.5 shoes: VJ Twister

Day3- Coppice-wood in hilly terrain (800-900m a.s.l) interposed by half-open areas, meadows, pastures, bushes and small woods with limestone and cliffs. Interesting landform: a lot of ridges and valleys with detailed small hills, with a lot of earth-banks and small knolls. Most rocky or stony ground, presence of little ruins and little stone walls. Reduced visibility in areas with bushes and young trees.

very different terrain at only 900m. Lots of yellow clearings and green thickets. no big mistakes but too many small ones. Winner did 57mins. I am humbled.

Day 1. Terrain description from program-
The terrain area is located 1300-1800 m a.s.l. Beech-forest with very good visibility and very fast running.Hills of different sizes and slopes (also steep slopes), ridges and valleys with a lot of details and a lot of special landform feature (charcoal platform, depressions). Stony ground with typical limestone formations.

Missed our starts by 1.5hrs. Thought it was 1.43pm but it was 1.43 after 10am!!! They were starting to pack up the start. Started 3mins behind Andy. Lost 2mins at 3 and took a while to catch him, but we ran hard together only making one small error. Felt really good physically today, even better than yesterday. Winner 67.

Orienteering race (AWD Cup) 1:11:20 [5] **** 9.1 km (7:50 / km) +500m 6:09 / km
slept:8.0

Stage 2- very warm afternoon. Nearly missed start by running to Start 1 instead of 3. Had a terrible start. Very detailed terrain and not expecting it. Quite scandinavian. Normally in enjoy short direction changing legs but my compass was so bad. 5mins behind after 9 controls and 18mins. Then very long leg up massive mountain, took wide left option hoping to save some climb but lost 3mins (21mins vs 18best)but was also very tired up hill. Saw Niklas Wrane (clubmate in Soders) in front so went hard to catch him. Then very long leg back down hill. I have never spent so long planning a route. Spent most of time on tracks but cut a few corners. Niklas ran just behind to whole way but dropped him near the control. Nailed the last few controls and won 5splits in a row (surely a record for me). Niklas won in 67, pretty soft time.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [3]
