Orienteering race (US Champs Day 1) 1:29:00 [4] 9.2 km (9:40 / km)

I felt like I had no pressure on me today, although I was super nervous in the morning because I knew I wasn't prepared for this race and that everyone was going to kick my butt.
I neglected to figure out that we were getting control codes at teh start so I dutifully tore out the Red X (I never took any biology/genetics classes) codes that morning and affixed them to my arm holder. When I made my way to the start i finially figured it out that these were NOT my course codes, so I ripped them off, but then when I recieved the actual codes, I was not prepared and as I was punching the start box, I was still fumbling trying to get the stupid piece of paper in the holder... stupid me.
So number 1 was horrendous, although certainly not as bad as it could have been. I got stuck in the green nastyness, attempting to find the reentrant and ditch too early. Finally headed back up the hill to the "ridge" (very vague) and found the little knoll/berm that was mapped, then relocated and went off of that and found the CP. Phew!
The rest of the course wasn't too bad, legs felt good and I was navigating and reading the map quite well, despite how rusty I thought I'd be. It felt so good to bomb through the woods, even considering how green and briar-y it was! I definitely had some iffy route choices, like the long leg that I decided to go straight through to...probably should have taken the road around, but I like woods running SO much more than road running...
Then after the bridge (radio control) I took the road around there and probably losta few minutes. oops.
But overall, navigating went pretty well and I didn't feel nearly as out of shape as I thought I would! (My tapering schedule must have worked!!!) ;o)
