Note

WCOC rocks my socks! a splendid training weekend. Many thanks to the whole club but especially to Susie and Rick who fed us and sheltered us, to Greg who set up saturday's exercises ( and amused us with this watermelon facials), and to Peter who set up Sunday's exercises.

will post more later, but I've really been failing at getting to bed on time for the past 3 weeks so now I'm heading off to the land of Nod.

Note

backlogged training from last weekend. Managed to break the split page for the ultralong in the process. See Brendan, maybe I'm just not meant to log my splits after all.

CT training camp this weekend is going to be a blast.

one last comment which is to say that it's been really fun to have so many CSU organized trainings in one week! lots of people pitching in and making a really active club socially and athletically.

biking to and from work. leaving work on time so as to pick up Clem for the weekend! CT watch out.

Trail run 1:10:14 [3] 7.5 mi (9:22 / mi)
ahr:169 max:182

So there was some discussion about running the skyline trail following the course from this past weekend. Clem ( who apparently has gotten the nickname Clembert) was the ringleader and got Will, Brendan and I to come along. After some poor communication as to where to meet ( they really did mean the ski slope, not the parking lot that we always park in when we do the shorter skyline training run) we met up. I started out pretty quickly, but Clem took the point up the first hill. At the top Will took over and about 10 minutes later I had lost contact with him, then I was running alone. felt like a hard effort almost all the time. Had songs stuck on repeat in my head and also knew that I wanted to run faster than Hilly's time from Sunday. Walked a bit of the last two hills and probably should have worn my contacts because of how sweaty everything got. Clem had given out copies of the course so we could follow along on the map. Really worried as I was going up the last hill that I was going to fall short of my beating Hilly goal but managed to survive the morning with my manful pride intact. Will estimates that he was about 4 minutes faster than me and Clem was a few minutes behind. I had to leave pretty quickly in order to drive home and then get into work. Fun fun!

biking 1:20:00 [3] 17.5 mi (4:34 / mi)

Biking to and from work today. more mouse surgery but less mouse fatality :) feeling like a pretty good day to me :) finished off the surgery by about 2:30 and then I biked over to my lab in Longwood. then in the evening back to give the surgery mice some pain killers and finally home!

legs tired for the evening rides.

biking 35:00 [3] 8.0 mi (4:22 / mi)

Biking to and from work. left work a little earlier than normal which felt very nice :)

orienteering 57:45 [3] 3.21 mi (17:59 / mi)

CSU training at the Sheepfold. Gave Lori and Presto a ride...we expected awful traffic but things were quite smooth. got to the parking lot pretty early. The training was a Line-o... something that I need to practice because I think I'm pretty weak in the area.

Ian had said the woods were nice. He might have been a little generous but not terrible by summer standards :) Tried to stay on the line and still keep a good flow... couple of places that were a disaster... once in a thick green area I tried to follow a bearing up to the top of the next hill but had the map folded and oriented to south... came out on the trail I had just left and thus had to hack through the jungle again. Another section where I was trying to read a couple of cliffs and got off the line but there Dean hailed me and got me back on track.

found all the 8 streamers ( well I found 7 and Dean found one for me) that Ian set out and two extra orange ones that just happened to be on the line. Also had a stranger indicate that he would like to have sex with me... at least that's what I gather. he grabbed at his crotch a little suggestively as I ran past in an area that had an awful lot of men just loitering around. I guess that can be a compliment.

biking 1:20:00 [3] 18.75 mi (4:16 / mi)

Oh, out and around on the bike. to work, then from work to the Harvard Stadium to pick up a copy of the Harry Potter movie for the themed movie night. Then to Lori's lab for the training. After training I went out to pick up thai food for the group (communists and capitalists alike) -- As an aside I ran into Kate Jensen, an orienteer from long ago (JWOC in Spain etc).... we chatted a bit and she asked when did US orienteering A-meets change format from two classic days to one short and one long ( I didn't really remember, It was kinda gradual for me). -- after the movie played out I biked over to give the mice their nightly dose of pain killers and then biked home.

orienteering 43:13 [3] 5.28 mi (8:11 / mi)

Lori's genius brain child -- Harry Potter themed CSU training. For more magical musings refer to Lori's evolving rules

rules

This was wicked fun got a lot of running in but felt easy. managed to find all 15 controls on the map, and all the 5 map fragments while they were at various checkpoints, and all 8 of the hidden controls (except the one locked in the playground). I also tagged lori if that counts for points all of a sudden.

At the end got stuck on the inside of a construction fence... trying to follow Alex to freedom was a big mistake and it took valuable minutes to extricate myself :)

biking 1:10:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:23 / mi)

biking to MIT lab. I spent the day helping with mouse surgery.... I prepped the mice and helped with the post-op care. 18 surgeries and many of them died... made for a long day. Then biked back to the Joslin lab... injected my rats... finally biked home.

I hadn't eaten yet today, and it was already pretty late... knew that it would be a bad idea to do my hills today. so it became a rest day
