Hillary Trail(ish) - Piha to Swanson

Risked running a bit more from the start today, though that was only a few km before I hit a big climb. As with before, the coastal views were awesome, before heading inland to fields and forest and big brutal climbs and descents. Was going ok generally, but the last quarter was a bit of a strugglefest of muddy climb, contouring and descents, before some quicker stuff to finish along the road.

Good fun adventuring, and good testing of kit and practicalities. Was carrying too much kit - camping in Rotorua had been freezing overnight but could have done without the down jacket here and probably my camping mat. Maybe dropped another thermal layer too, but wasn't sure how quickly I'd be moving given hamstring so played it pretty safe on food/drink quantities & warm clothes availability.

Next up is going a bit further, in the Barrington Tops, in winter...

Hillary Trail(ish) Day 2 - Huia to Piha

Super slow going for the first hour, walked about 4km in a tough, rooty, muddy slog up a hill and legs weren't too happy about it, so decided a shortcut to the coast would be a good idea to shave about 10-12km off the day.

The route along Walkers Ridge track was narrow and muddy, but once back on the Hillary Trail route the tracks generally improved. Dropping down through the campsite at Pararaha onwards was fun, and the scenery changed greatly, through some wetlands and out for a few km along the black sand beaches to Karekere.

From there it's another long slog up hill, but the views are more than worth it, and some nice ridge running along the coast before turning inland, a spot of road running and then dropping into Piha via Kitekite falls which were mighty refreshing!

Hillary Trail Part 1 - Titirangi - Ataraki - Huia

Bit later than planned leaving Auckland, but bus to Titirangi and onto the exhibition drive - walked the easy first 6km to the visitor centre to warm the hamstring up and from there once on the Hillary trail proper jogged the downs and flats, walked the steeper stuff. Some fun trails, mainly easy firetrail, with lots of mud and roots in the middle singletrack section. Reached the campsite not long before 6 to put the tent up in the last of the daylight, only one other person there.

Run to the cafe for dinner before it closed, but in the dark got spooked by bulls and lost the trail so went renegade XC route.
