Note
(rest day)

Another day off. Again it fecking rained so my grass remains uncut, with the heat and not rain it's going to be a jungle by next week.

Control descriptions printed and cut up for Monday.

Left achilles sore walking around today, thinking the shoes i'm wearing may not be helping, time for a new pair.

Wednesday May 30, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Tired today.

Tough day walking around villages in South Kerry in the sun!

Had planned on cutting the grass but it rained when I got home.

Erik started Baby Pilates today with his mother, he was good at engaging his core.

Road 48:31 [3] 10.17 km (4:46 / km) +92m 4:34 / km
ahr:148 max:159 shoes: Brooks Ghost 10

Highlight of the run was seeing a chap cycling, fast, a penny farthing bike next to Deenagh Lodge.

Left ankle still not recovered after going over on it Sunday warming up. Calves also not great. Achilles didn’t feel good at work but better in running shoes.

It was warm out, definitely not used to these sort of temperatures but good to have. My mother in law was saying it was too warm to run, but I don’t listen to her most of the time!

Note

Feeling tired after the weekend, body definitely under some pressure. Can feel it. Old age.

Monday - Bike
Tuesday - Run
Wednesday - Bike
Thursday - Rest
Friday - Orienteering (Killarney Urban)
Saturday - Orienteering (Shamrock Day 1)
Sunday - Controls out for Shamrock Day 3

My cycling club have their league race on Thursday, wouldn't mind racing, but think I need to conserve energy ahead of the weekend.

Cycling 59:22 [3] 33.36 km (1:47 / km) +159m 1:44 / km
ahr:154 max:175 shoes: Spiuk ZS11

Time adjusted to moving time. Had a bad time with traffic lights this evening.

Not used to cycling with a dry mouth due to it being warm. Bit of wind though on the way in to town and out to Beaufort so was looking forward to a tailwind on the way home.

With the lights I’d practice accelerating from a stop.

Not feeling too bad. Small bit tired waking up but lack of sleep and yesterday's labours probably the cause.

Made sure to tape my baby toes after the blisters that resulted from these shoes during WWR.

Orienteering race 49:02 [4] **** 8.5 km (5:46 / km) +25m 5:41 / km

Rossbeigh
Munster League

Got 1 fine but not 2, ended up to the right of it, didn't really visualise what I was looking for and that cost me. Definitely straightforward if simplified.

Went out to the beach for 3, so straight east and long by 4. Although using the path would have been probably better.

Next few controls were all fine. Did see Josh come across me between 7 and 8.

Could see Agris in front of me going to 10 and then passed him at 11.

Leaving 11 I saw Tony and Zac to the left which brought me that direction to 12, otherwise I think I would have been to the right, so escaped some time loss here. Also a new target in front of me to chase down.

Caught Zac at 13 and then passed him with a better line to 14.

Went to the right of the hills to 16 and then stayed hight to 17. 18 was then a small bit further than I expected.

Saw Jens in front of me to 20 and 21. He went more left after leaving the beach at 21 so gained ground and also his exit from 21 meant I went by him.

Next few controls were just running, and I only realised afterwards that 26 was in the wrong place, had planned to come along the track and then the control was there, didn't think anymore of it since the code was right.

27 was the last bit of tough running just getting across to it, hard after the loop before it.

That's what I thought happened out there, will check the splits next.
They confirm time lost at 2. Other than that I'd a good few fastest splits and not much behind the fastest on others. But didn't take the lead until the 11th control after that early miss.

Good turnout on the Brown course today. Feeling the pressure of the young lads. Home advantage probably the difference.

Crohane & Tír na Spidóige

Erecting stiles with robrunner & Conrad. Grand weatherwise, sun only made an appearance for the last stile.

Most of the work was fine apart from the last couple of stiles on Crohane. Sweet mother of god the midges were awful. Swarms of them, and i'd even put on some repellent. We were eaten alive.

Managed to get out training today. Lovely day for it too. Garmin is saying temperatures over 20 degrees for the spin, although cooler in the wind.

Didn't feel too fit this evening, and time on the climb reflects that. To be expected and I really need to do something about it. Recovered more or less from last weekend by now, still some calf stuff to work out.

Descent was fun, after the café I caught a car, stuck behind it for a bit, and then went for the pass on the straight after Derrycunnihy, not much left in the descent at that stage but sure what the heck.

Good to get out anyways. And some Giro stage today, managed to avoid the radio again this evening so no clue what was about to unfold in the highlights!

Busy weekend ahead.

(rest day)

Another rest day! This time I was working late.

Got a project that they want done by the end of June +/- half a week. Offered all the extra work time I might need. Why won't you work overtime? Because i've a month old baby at home and need (want) to train. What do managers expect!

Wednesday May 23, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

No time this evening. Visitors and Erik not in the best of form.

Legs getting better apart from calves. Alpha ball seems to be helping though, feeling some improvement in the tightness after using it.

Note
(rest day)

Foam rolled this morning and will do so again later. Calves are very tight, rest of the muscles are improving.

Day off to take Erik for a spin to Tipperary and back.

Note
(rest day)

Plan for this week is to recover!
Jeep & trailer crawling on the Tralee Road this morning, incredibly frustrating as making my 9am appointment at the dentist on time seemed less and less likely. Attempted to run from the car to the dentists (<100m) once parked and it hurt. Legs definitely in bits still from Saturday.

It's still hard to know if the race has had an serious affects on my legs as too much general soreness.

Monday - Rest/Recovery
Tuesday - Rest/Recovery
Wednesday - Rest/Recovery
Thursday - Rest (working late)
Friday - Bike
Saturday - Stile building, upper body workout
Sunday - Orienteering (Rossbeigh)

Recovery

Was ok for the legs turning the pedals, lowered resistance using gears. The legs spun away fine.

Biggest problem was getting back off the bike again, finding the strength to twist feet to clip off the pedals, not easy!

Did some stretching afterwards, wanted to foam roll but I needed a bottle.

Wicklow Way Relay 2018 - Leg 6

Put as much effort into it as I could but 6 minutes down on fastest time. That’s kind of disappointing and must be reflective of my current shape. I’d not run in 3 weeks and even then I’ve probably run 4/5 times in the last month. Not surprising so. Work to be done.

Went off hard down the road and then in the forest the climb began. Maybe a couple of breaks but not for long. Tough in the heat, could have done with a drink and the race was only just started. Bit of a stitch on the flatter part before the climb on the boardwalk but managed to get rid of it.

Boardwalk uphill and then some gravel trail. Not easy. Then left and right onto a bigger forest road. This went on forever, uphill too. Really dry mouth. Dust on the roads with the wind not helping.

Met a guy running down the hill who gave me encouragement. Said the people in front were very close. Didn’t look like that to me with an empty road in front.

On the way down legs were complaining a bit but felt better again down the boardwalk. Little bump afterwards I didn’t enjoy but then the new/old section of the leg on the grass path. Best bit of the leg. Saw a guy in front and 2 more way up the hill on the far side of the road.

Passed the guy on the next hill after the road. Not as long a hill. Didn’t expect the steep descent to the shelter, kind of thought it was going to keep climbing until the shelter. Legs definitely complaining on the descent so had to hold back a small bit.

Next section was back on a big forest road and it was pure suffering. Small drag on it was awful. After that it was descent on the forest road then onto tarred road, somehow I managed to jump the forest barrier, expected a face plant the way legs were feeling.

Looking out then going down the road for the track. Easy to spot. And could see the bottom of the valley so knew finish was close.

Wearing old CorkO top worked out well, broken zip helped with ventilation. Tough day for racing.

Quads battered afterwards, will be in an awful state come Monday when the DOMS will have set in.

Great team effort today. My 1st Wicklow Way Relay, would I go back, I suspect I would if asked, but probably for another leg. Nothing too exciting in mine.
10 PM

Note

Looks like I’ve an extra toe!
Serious blister on left baby toe, also one on right baby toe. But left one is big. Could feel toe rubbing off shoe when running so not unexpected.

Missing out on a nice day. But will stick to it, must be best prepared to give my team 100% tomorrow since there's at least 1 more orienteering club entered, got to beat them...

Cycling 1:00:21 [3] 31.83 km (1:54 / km) +362m 1:48 / km

Not a bad evening, felt like there was some wind at times but didn't bother me cycling. Bit of effort this evening at times. Quads have been tired since Tuesday, but didn't affect the cycle too much, could feel them although they didn't hinder pedalling. Not ideal ahead of Saturday.

Passed 2 bikes on the way up, early and late in the climb. Then near the top 2 cyclists came down against me, they'd around 2 minutes of a head start, which I reeled in at the bottom of the climb. PRs on the way down. Helped by having a clear run at it too, no traffic.

Same time on the climb, exactly, as last time a couple of weeks ago. Felt ok today, HR up, but didn't feel bad at that level.

Rest tomorrow again to look forward to.

Note
(rest day)

Rested due to some relations calling and with 3 days in a row done after 2 weeks off a rest day felt right. Will do something tomorrow and then rest again on Friday.

Did some research of my leg for Saturday. Next up is to figure out what's up and down.

Also found a 10k on when i'm on holidays, coastal path. 1 hour from base so will need to see if it's feasible or not.

Knockreer

Didn't have much time. Kept the pace what I thought was easy enough, felt ok with it, until I started to come back along the river, was on the way home at that stage but legs started to feel tired. The lack of running in the last couple of weeks I blame for that.

Physio last week helped the Achilles, felt ok this evening.

Glenflesk-Killarney

Got out for a spin in the sun, had to after being stuck in the car for the afternoon up and down to Cork. And managed to get a trip to the Garda station in too before getting out. Kept it short as family had to be fed too!

Bit of an effort in the end, wasn't really planning on that, but decided to keep it going, give the HR a chance to get used to being high before Saturday. Felt like a headwind coming back into Killarney.

Took the bypass in to get some new tarmac into the spin on Port Road. Got the adrenaline even further up at the cinema when someone decided they wanted to drive out in front of me. I thought it might have been a driverless car as the driver must have been blind, took a chance on them not being deaf too, and my luck was in, they managed to hear my warning shouts. That close call kept things motoring nicely until home.

Nice morning out, small bit cool, but good cycling weather.

Body I think survived, we'll see how this in addition to building some stiles later on Crohane affect it, with i'm assuming not much sleep tonight too.

First spin this direction this year, had been avoiding Port Road until the road works were done. Much nicer spin up that road now, only downside is the removal of the cycle lane on the way back in, the short one between Ross Road and the Haw Haw also gone. Liebherr haven't done a good job on the one by them either, kerb raised on the factory side! How can they mess up like that.

HR up a bit higher. Saw a bike in front of me too on the way out Muckross road after Hegartys so that spurred me on at that point. Did suffer more up the road home though as a result.

Hill Walking 1:50:00 [1]

With robrunner and Conrad. Being stile builders for the afternoon. Arms tired form carrying timber and tools. And only got just over half built.

Terrain over the fence does look good.

Mary might need to hold Erik later for his bath. Arms are fairly wrecked.

Ordered latest addition to my foam rolling armoury too this morning. The Alpha Ball.

Depending on how much sleep I get plan is to train tomorrow morning. Feeling a lot better today, only a random cough here and there.

Cut the grass this morning so at least some sort of exercise. Nice morning for it. Once we got back from getting a passport photo of Erik taken. Guy was taking about photoshopping it!

Friday May 11, 2018 #

Saturday - Bike
Sunday - Run

Coughing this evening a bit.
Might cut the lawn tomorrow. Log is now devoid of training for a week and this coming week I suspect will not be showing much either. Annoyed to be missing out on the sun.

Note

Just remembered the IOA AGM was taking place this evening, what’re the chances that someone else was interested in my position???

Note

Would otherwise be disappointed to be at home this weekend but taking the positives from Erik.

Not any worse, and maybe slightly better. With the sun shining I would like to be doing something. Maybe I’ll try cutting the lawn on Monday or going for a cycle.

Friday May 4, 2018 #

Note

Decision made, not travelling this weekend.

Don’t feel well enough to make the journey and the races worthwhile, I’d only come back worse. Bit of an underlying cold and coughing up phlegm so not 100%.

Thursday May 3, 2018 #

Note

Still under the weather. Something lingering, not getting any worse but not necessarily getting any better. Annoying.

Day off, needed. Feeling rough going to bed last night, but a small bit better today, not worse anyways. Got more sleep by staying in bed later.

Still not made a decision on this weekend, will see how we feel later in the week.

Going to give today a miss too for a few reaons:
