Orienteering race 2:04:18 [4] 10.4 km (11:57 / km)

Classic course at Round Mt.

I had signed up for Red before I knew it was 10.4k! I almost dropped down to Green, thinking I couldn't finish the Red course, but in the end decided to stick with it and if it proved to be too much, I would just walk it in.

Well, not only did I do the whole thing, I actually felt really good! I was moving quickly the whole time (mix of running and fast walking) and my navigation was dead on for almost all of the controls. I was a little left (again!) on one control, but quickly relocated, and then I got to the cliff that was another control, but didn't see a control. I was sure I was in the right spot, and luckily I looked up and saw the control on the TOP of the cliff. Who puts a control on top of a cliff?!?

Other than those two, everything went great. I was really happy I stuck with Red. The only bad thing was that I re-crunched my ankle towards the end of the course, and now it's all swollen again. I need to be a little more careful.

Orienteering race 27:05 [4]

Round Mt. Sprint 1

Down at Round Mt. for a weekend of fabulous orienteering. Neal Barlow set up 4 forest sprints for today. The first one went pretty well; I was just a little off on two of the controls.

Orienteering race 26:19 [4]

Round Mt. Sprint #2

This was my worst sprint navigation-wise. I messed up on three controls, one of them pretty badly. I kept veering too far off to the left.

Orienteering race 26:40 [4]

Round Mt. Sprint #3

And this was my best sprint of all of them. (I didn't have time to do the 4th one.) I was still running a good bit throughout this one and didn't have any errors at all...spiked them all. It felt great!

Note

We were originally thinking of camping at the Round Mt. campground, but the road into the assembly area was so rutted from the rains this summer, that I wanted to drive as little as possible on it. So, we decided to camp right at the start area. Luckily, we had the meet port-a-pottie close by (thanks, Doug, for hauling it in!), so we were set. There weren't that many ATVers around, so it was actually pretty peaceful. So peaceful, that I slept 11 hours that night!
