Twin Peak Day 1 Macclesfield Forest - Black
Awesome area + good course = much enjoyment.
I really cannot stress how nice the forest was, both the ridiculously runnable white as well as the lower visibility stuff.
#1 Climbed up the path adding unnecessary distance / climb before I realised that the white really was white! 20s
#6 Took a direct route through the fight. I was on a perfect line (I appear to have been less than 20m from the control) but then came to a significant unmapped fence. Thinking it would be foolish to ignore such a huge feature (even though I was pretty sure I was in the right place) I went back out and attacked from a different point. Not sure why the fence was omitted from the map. 2m
#9 Very vague area – the plan was to pick up the wall but before I had dropped sufficiently I picked up an elephant track and followed it west beyond the control. Looped back east and searched several bits of wall before finding the correct section. 1m 30s
#13 Thought I did this ok but gave up 40s to Fellbaum. Another beautiful area of white so presumably straighter was greater. 30s
#14 Opposite to the previous control – I went pretty straight to maintain height but this was slow through the section between the two streams (marshy with lots of reeds). Dropping down to the big path then following the indistinct path back up to the control would have been quicker. 1m
#16 Intended to go straight but, despite it looking ok, changed my mind to follow the ride (as this made the control easier). Unfortunately, not only did this involve a short dog-leg, but the ride was also piled high with brashings, significantly slowing progress. 1m 30s
#18 Distracted by another competitor (hadn’t seen anyone for a while) meant I contoured and climbed sharply, rather than the gradual straight climb I had intended. 30s
#20 Had looked at this when walking up the hill to #12. Right general choice although micro route choice in the vicinity of #13 and when crossing the first road could have saved some time. 40s
#21 Hesitant in finding the path. 10s
Finished 2nd (of a pitiful 5+1), 7 min down on Thomas Fellbaum. As far as one can tell from the splits in such a limited field, I seemed to be running at a similar pace to him but he was a lot cleaner.
