Orienteering race 5:28:39 [3]
ahr:126
Rogaine at Rock Lake and an excellent course that sent competitors in every direction with no obvious control order...I suspect many controls were attacked differently by different people.....overall I thought Kari and I had a solid day picking up 12 controls in 5:28 with 85% fast hiking and 15% running...I averaged 126 on the HR and might have been able to put in an effort avg 10 beats higher but I figured a conservative pace with solid navigation would get us the best result...
I think MCarl does a great job setting for "front of the pack" and "back of the pack" teams....and this course was no exception....
I figured at the start that 12 controls would be a good result with 14 a fantastic day...
we bobbled on 104....and had some small correction on 3 other controls but we corrected very quickly and our navigation was solid, I stayed on the map all day......
we had three issues that kept us from gather two more controls;
1. I missed seeing 103 on the edge of the map...(we could have picked it up after 104 or better yet run down and got it before heading to 103)....I think I might have folded the map and put it out of sight...did not notice this until Sunday...
2. We planned to get 116 from the east but the three dashed black line trails on the map to get us close did not exist on the ground and we were forced to come up with a new "home stretch" plan to get back west to the finish and collect controls on the way back home....we actually did this pretty well but we lost 20-30 minutes?? due to having to change our preplanned route choice that would have used these trails.......
3. most likely we could have picked up 101 after 109 but did not want to chance coming back late....and it did not make any difference in our standing anyway so it was good to play it safe and leave 30 minutes on the table....
It would have been nice to see a few more "average" teams out there to duke it out with....
