Discussion: Which pace setting do you use?

Pace, Pace-Avg, or Pace-Lap.
You will get very different results from each one.
At least I do, but my pace can vary a lot.

I had set some pace alarms, but they didn't seem to start when I started my 'interval workout' and I couldn't really be bothered stopping to sort it out, so I was just looking at the display on screen as I ran - I assume it was an instantaneous (probably smoothed over somewhere between 5-20 sec) pace reading as it jumped around a bit, but seemed to indicated from the times that I looke at it that I was running in the 3:30's a lot, but somehow the km's seemed to hit about hte 3:40 mark.
Should probably read the manual and experiment a bit more, but on the other hand, it is probably more use to try to figure out what pace I can sustain by running according to how I feel rather than worrying about exact pace off a watch. I have guestimated a 10km time to aim at for the Bridges, but that is based on an 8yr old PB, what I ran in the Bridges 7 years ago, my 5km PB (from 7 years ago), by half mararthon PB (7yrs ago) what I'm currently running for the Golf Course 5km TT.\

Basically I just want to get a handle on not starting like a flat out 5km (about 3:20/km), but not getting into that slightly lazy rhythm that I fall into by default when I try to back off a little (usually 3:45-3:50). It's like my body wants me to choose between a short race or a half mararthon but has no in-between rhythm

I'm guessing that no GPS was used when setting those times 7-8 years ago, so running by how you feel has some merit.
Have you got the alarm set to prevent you from going too fast, so you can back off?
I haven't had a look at the manual but I think you could have an alarm set for say 3:20/km for the first few km of the race then have it turn off after a set distance for when you want to put the hammer down.
Of course none of this is of any use if the readings aren't accurate to start with.

Haven't really checked. I know I can set an alarm for too fast and too slow, but don't know about switching it off part way thru (without having to press lots of buttons mid-race)

How does that work for a run where you want to do long run pace for half and hour, then switch to race pace, then back again?

Gee, you'd hvae to go into "settings" "interval" and "custom" or something like that - rather than using a pre-set one. Not even sure how to do it as I've never tried with paces - usually when I've had a goal of a pace to hold in training I've just set it to show "lap pace" (eg. my run around Herdsman where I was aiming for 4:30s) and it seemed pretty good.

I always use lap pace for my intervals and never look at it until I've run at least 200m.
If you want to avoid starting too fast at Bridges, just stay behind me for the first km. I bet you can't do it.

What is your plan for the first km?? (but you're probably both right unless Craig is starting in the 3:20's somewhere...)
