That is annoying. My strategy these days is to turn it on and leave it by the window as I'm doing all the things prior to running - putting on the winter clothes, calling the dog, feeding him his pill, etc. However, I am surprised by how long it takes at times.
What is interesting is the times I turn it on for a second time during the day - even 12 hours later, it usually turns on right away, without even much of a search. I have to do this on days I download the data; if I leave more than 4 or so days of workouts in memory, the software has less than 50% success rate on downloading the data (especially with the web version). So after downloading, I usually erase the history.

I find that when my GPS just doesn't seem to want to acquire satellite signals, if I turn it off and then turn it back on, it seems to do better. Kind of like it needs to reboot something, or something like that ...

I usually turn on my GPS and put it on our front porch (from where it has a view of about 50% of the sky) while I'm tying my shoes and putting on the last few items like a hat or gloves. It's usually ready to go when I come back out. But not always ... like this time. I figured once I got running, and was away from my house, it would eventually come to life, but it didn't. I ran about 0.6 miles, it still wasn't getting any signal, so I stopped, turned it off, then back on, and within about 2 minutes it was fine.
