I can't imagine a more positive, worthwhile effort. Giving 150 kids a brief introduction to the natural aquatic world in such a "hands on" experience. I would guess that many of them will remember this the rest of their lives.

Many of us "environmentalists" write letters, donate money, and wring our hands...but seldom ever think of informing the next generation. But at its core, isn't that what concern for the environment is all about? What a wonderful effort.

And re those beavers; we here in the city also have trouble with rodents of a different type. Experts tell us that we'll never exterminate them entirely; poisons and traps merely cause a short-term blip in their numbers. The best strategy is to reduce their food supply as much as possible...and learn to live with them. Good luck.

The children's field trip day is always fun, and very rewarding. When we had an exchange student two years ago, we saw many of the high school kids who were his friends. Several of them mentioned how much they had enjoyed coming on that field trip as young kids 10 years earlier. Very fine!

As for the beavers, given that their food supply is gnawing on bark, limiting it is not an option. Trapping them can be pretty effective. I have one now in my small pond. Last time I had one there was 3 years ago. I don't really mind if I only have to evict one every 3 years. My larger pond is another matter. It has a lot of beavers and they are undoubtedly manufacturing young beavers at an alarming rate, while still finding the energy to raise the water level precipitously.
